News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

23 July 2296 - Shed Masters Salem in Complete Game Win

Julian Shed was locked and loaded, helping the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys beat the Salem Witch Hats, 8-1. The last-place Party Boys have won 4 consecutive games.

Shed earned the win to move to 4-3. In his complete-game performance, he allowed 1 run on 5 hits, striking out 4 and walking 1.

"Feels good to get the job done," Shed said after the game.

Tomas Jones continued the momentum he earned from a hot week that earned him Brotherhood League Player of the Week Honors. He spurred the Party Boys in offense, going 3 for 4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI.

23 July 2296 - 5-for-5 Game for Inman

Fairline Hill Estates Yao Guai third baseman Grognak Inman really lit up the Shaw HS Knuckle Punchers with a 5-hit barrage today at Atomatoys Stadium -- a performance that sparked the Yao Guai to a 7-1 triumph.

He shrugged off the performance after the game, saying "sometimes the ball finds outfielders, today the ball found some holes."

Grognak Inman singled in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

This year Inman has batted at a .314 pace with 64 hits, 8 home runs, 43 RBIs and scored 34 times.

24 July 2296 - Synths Whipple Blanks Chemists

Lawdog Whipple of the Lexington Synths put on a dazzling performance at Vim! Park today. He shut out the Sunshine Tidings Chemists 6-0 on a well-pitched 5-hitter, ringing up 6 strikeouts and issuing no walks.

"I felt strong out there all day," Whipple said later.

In 17 starts this season Whipple has recorded a 7-4 record and a 4.74 ERA.

24 July 2296 - Tentsleep Stretches Hit String to 20

Nobody has been able to shut down The Slog Ghouls shortstop Lernz Tentsleep in recent days. The East Boston Prep Assaultrons fared no better than the rest.

Today at Easy Town Field, Tentsleep picked up 1 hit in 5 at-bats en route to a 12-6 Ghouls victory. It stretched his hitting string to 20 consecutive games.

Lernz Tentsleep struck out in the 2nd, walked in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, hit a two-run single in the 6th, flied out in the 7th and grounded out in the 9th.

This season Tentsleep is batting .309 with 64 hits and 8 home runs. He has scored 47 times and has 40 RBI.

24 July 2296 - Castillo Gets 5 Hits

Thanks to Mike Castillo and his big bat, the Witch Hats derailed the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys 11-8 in 11 innings today at Red Rocket Stadium. The Salem center fielder had a standout game with 5 hits in 6 at-bats. Mike Castillo grounded out in the 1st, doubled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit an RBI triple in the 7th, doubled in the 9th and singled in the 10th.

So far this season Castillo has gotten 77 hits in 224 at-bats for a .344 batting average with 1 home run. His stats include 33 RBIs and 48 runs scored. He has played in 50 games.

Salem trailed 8-1 heading into the 6th inning. The Witch Hats scored 4 runs in the 6th, 2 runs in the 7th, 1 run in the 9th, and 3 runs in the 11th.

Dustin Mart was the most outstanding player for the Party Boys. He was 4 for 5 with a grand slam, a run scored, and 4 RBI.

"It wasn't our day," Nordhagen Beach player-coach Dan Neofotistos said. He had a season-best 3 for 3 day with a double, 2 runs scored, and a walk. "Our pitching from top to bottom has to be able to hold off teams when we have a 7-run lead. It's that simple."

25 July 2296 - Carrotflower Keeps Hit Streak Alive

The hot bat of Bloodbugs second baseman Joel Carrotflower continues to churn out hit after hit, game after game. His consecutive-game hitting streak now numbers 20 games after he went 1-for-5 in today's 14-2 loss to the Four Leafs at Finch Family Park.

"I'm trying not to think about it much," he said later. "I don't want to mess with whatever zone I'm in."

Joel Carrotflower grounded out in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, grounded out in the 6th, doubled in the 8th and flied out in the 9th.

Currently Carrotflower has no home runs and a .360 batting average.

25 July 2296 - Party Boys Edge Witch Hats, 7-6

The Salem Witch Hats got a superb performance from pinch hitter Scott Bregman, but the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys' Clux Oldstreet still won the game, 7-6.

Bregman was 1 for 1 with a grand slam in the 6th inning to give his team a 6-5 lead.

However, Nordhagen Beach took a 7-6 lead, which proved to be the final score, on Clux Oldstreet's 4th double of the season. The 2-run double, which Oldstreet hit in the bottom of the seventh, left Salem pitcher Josh Hugs shaking his head.

"I'm just happy to help the team win," Oldstreet told Publick Occurences. "Even if I come off the bench, I need to perform. Today, I felt like a demigod."

25 July 2296 - McMillen and Maskhelm Suspended 5 Games for Brawl

It was quite a row yesterday at Coolest Field in Town. The Cats Ray McMillen and the Hancocks Steve Maskhelm backed up their angry words with a few shoves and a few swings. Then both dugouts raced onto the field and got involved in the fracas. When it was over, only McMillen and Maskhelm were ejected.

As expected they were informed by the league office that they would each have to serve 5-game suspensions for their inappropriate actions.

Currently McMillen is hitting .376 and has collected 7 home runs, 43 RBIs and scored 44 times, while playing in 51 games.

Maskhelm has allowed 9 earned runs in 4.2 innings for a 17.36 ERA. He is 0-1.

25 July 2296 - Paladin Danse Drills 3 HR in One Game

Today was a special one for Paladin Danse of the Egret Scrappers as he slammed three home runs in the 19-12 win over the Diamond City Swatters.

"Lately, I've been uppercutting the ball too much," he said to Publick Occurrences after the game. "I would hit it hard, but they just went sky high and stayed in the ballpark. No big long outs for me in this game. I leveled out my swing and connected on the sweet spot. I knew they were gone the minute I hit 'em."

The Egret left fielder collected 3 hits in 5 at-bats, drove in 8, and scored 3 runs in the contest at The Great Green Jewel. His 3 home runs sets the Railroad League single-game record. The 8 RBI ties the record.

Paladin Danse walked in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, grounded out in the 4th, hit a three-run home run off Danny Owens in the 6th, hit a two-run home run off Matt Suds in the 7th and hit a three-run home run off Josh Samm in the 9th.

Batting .421 to date, Danse has 20 home runs and 64 RBIs.

There were two more records tied in the 19-12 game. Diamond City's Jeffrey Curatolo tied the RL record for times walked with 4. Egret's Jason Eisch tied the record for runs scored with 4.
