October 10, 1901 – WS Game 2: Cardinals @ Athletics
PHA: E. Head [0-0] v STL: H. Gumbert [0-0]
The Cards jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st as a nervy Ed Head gave up 5 hits. But this was the only highlight for the Redbirds as the A’s slowly worked their way back into the game with runs in each of the 2nd and 3rd innings and then went berserk in the 4th as Harry Gumbert fell to pieces. For the second game running the St Louis starter failed to make it past the halfway point as Philadelphia knocked him out of the game with 5 runs on 5 hits and a crucial error by Cardinals 3B JP Crawford. Down 7-3, the Cards needed the quick response but in fact it was Philadelphia who scored next with a one-spot in the 5th, and when they followed that up with another run in the next to be up by 6, the Cards were done. Head only gave up 5 hits in 8 shutout innings after his horror 1st, and his team heads to the Midwest with a commanding 2-0 lead.
