April 1978 Rookies of the Month
SJL:
If there is one thing that the San Antonio Keys know how to develop it is great hitting position players. And their rookie left fielder John Freeman joins those ranks, with a combination of great raw power and an advanced hit tool and approach at the plate. On the other hand, he is slow and a poor fielder and doesn't even profile as more than a barely adequate future first baseman. This won't help the league worst pitching staff much. Fortunately the Keys do have a couple of very talented starting pitching prospects at AAA this year but with the team defense being poor overall (Gold Glove shortstop Bud Lindsay being the obvious exception), this team may just need to slug its way into contention. That hasn't worked out very well for them thus far.
MGL:
Baltimore's rookie right fielder Robert Mustard looks like a captain in the making. He is also a plus hitter with elite speed and running skills who is solid, if unspectacular in the field. Just what the already offensively gifted Lords needed- more hitting! (Note: this is one of those times where the merits of Overall/Potential star ratings seem to come into question. Granted, his power isn't elite and he doesn't have the strongest arm for a right fielder, but how is this guy only a 2 1/2 star player?)
