At this stage of the WPK season only one qualifying batter in the WPK is hitting over .400, and he is hitting at a torrid .432 pace, and that man is the unheralded Milwaukee Cadets third baseman Steven Brown.
Very little stands out about Steven Brown other than the fact that in his three full-seasons in the WPK he has never hit below .304 and has a lifetime batting average of .310 as he approaches age 30 soon. Granted, Brown is considered a very tough man to strike out, with his 40 strikeouts last season being a career high. He is on pace to strikeout just 19 times this season. But most scouts don't rate his hit tool particularly high. So one might assume that he plays his home games in a great hitters park. One would assume wrong. Pere Marquette Park in Milwaukee is if anything a ballpark that slightly favors pitchers, with the only advantage to hitters being (slightly) in the area of hitting doubles. (It is a park that particularly suppresses home run power, not that Brown is really a power hitter.)
So how do we explain it? We don't, we just enjoy the mystery. And the unassuming 3rd round pick, largely unknown around the country, continues to enjoy confounding scouts and, especially, opposing pitchers.
