August 13-14, 2024: vs Boston (2)

August 13: Activated P Tyler Glasnow from his rehab assignment at AAA Durham, sent P Shane McClanahan to AAA Durham.

Well this was the path of least resistance, as none of the relievers warranted demotion and while McClanahan has outpitched Asa Lacy, McClanahan has options and Lacy doesn't.

Game 1: Tyler Glasnow made his return from the IL, and wasn't quite himself though he did manage to limit the damage. He went 6 7 2 2 4 1 (only 1 strikeout is a bit concerning) but had 2 double plays turned behind him and a 3rd which erased his leadoff walk in the 7th after being pulled. As a result the Rays were able to stay in the game and a pair of runs in the 7th and a pair of runs in the 8th were enough to give them a 4-2 win. Nick Schnell walked and Brandon Marsh singled ahead of Vidal Brujan, who ripped a 2-run double off the CF wall to tie the game, and then after an Austin Meadows single, Rafael Devers took it out on his old team with HR #15 off Boston starter Pablo Lopez, who went the entire 8 innings. Mitchell Verburg was the reliever who got the double play for Meadows, and Jose Alvarado continued his renaissance with a 2-strikeout 8th to pick up the win. Jasseel De La Cruz had no issues with a 1-2-3 9th to get save #21.

Game 2: It's not every day you lose your starter in the 3rd inning to injury yet still end up with a 3-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts but that's what the Rays did today in a 3-0 win at the offensively-suffocating Trop. Walker Buehler had to depart with one out in the third with back spasms but he should still be able to make his next start. DL Hall picked up his first Rays win by going the next 2 2/3 with 2 walks and 4 Ks, Mitch Keller pitched the 6th and 7th, allowing only one hit and whiffing 3, Jose Alvarado was lights out again with 2 Ks in the 8th and rather than go to Jasseel De La Cruz for the second straight day I used Nick Anderson, who hadn't pitched in 6 days to close it out and he had a perfect 2K inning as well for save #3. The offense came from Wander Franco, who doubled in Vidal Brujan in the first, and Rafael Devers, who hit a 2-run HR in the 6th off Tyler Ivey as he homered for the second straight day.

Team record: 75-40. Next up: 4 home games with Cleveland, a team that gave us fits at Progressive Field.
