The View from the BMU
by Nat Wright-Kowalski
10 August 2297 – Forest Grove Marsh
On certain Tuesdays for the 2297 and 2298 seasons, we will feature one of the settlements where teams in the Boston Minor Union play.
In our fourth trip around the BMU, we will go to a small, newer settlement just to the west of the Charles, Forest Grove Marsh.
Then
According to a terminal entry from 2287, "Forest Grove was once a small, scenic town overlooking the Charles River. Now it's a fetid marsh, due to the nonfunctional river lock and the failure of riverside floodwalls. This combination has driven off all but the most inquisitive or reckless scavengers. The dam is home to a small scavenger camp, where transients occasionally stop for the night.
"Half of the town is flooded with irradiated water and inhabited by feral ghouls. Mutated fern plants are known to grow at Forest Grove marsh and are sought for radiation resisting properties."
Simply put, Nate Howard came upon the area around the time he was on a baseball memorabilia quest for Moe Cronin and a mutated fern quest for Solomon from Diamond City. Nate annihilated the ghouls and collected the mutated ferns he needed there. He also planted his Nate flag there to let raiders know they had better keep their distance.

There are not a lot of dangers of mass flooding around the Commonwealth these days. Settlers started with the basics of getting the Boston Dam working properly and then working back the river waters in the town. Then they cleaned up the place to look nice.
There are a number of shops and basic needs met. If there are larger needs, the settlers make their way across the river to Vault 81 or head west to Fort Hagen.
The town is not a wealthy place likely to grow larger like Diamond City, Lexington, and Quincy, among others, but it does play an important part in controlling the Boston Dam and helping to clear out some of the places where the river had taken over, along with the problems of massive breeding spots for mirelurks south of the dam. In recent months, Westing Estate has even started to clear for some brave adventurer to take over as his estate. Perhaps Moe Cronin's retirement spot?
