August 23-25, 2024: vs Seattle (3)

Game 1: It was the Tyler Glasnow show at the Trop tonight as the righthander pitched the best game of his career, a 6-0 1-hit shutout of the Seattle Mariners in which he walked 2 and struck out 9. It was his second career shutout and complete game after last year's 6-hitter against Minnesota. The only hit he allowed was a 3rd inning double to JP Crawford, and he was never in any trouble. The offense came early with a couple of runs in the 2nd on a Nick Schnell RBI double and a Meibrys Viloria groundout. Schnell added an RBI groundout in the 4th to make it 3-0 and a solo HR in the 6th. The other runs came on a Rafael Devers RBI double in the 5th and Vidal Brujan's 5th HR of the year in the 7th. But Glasnow was the story with his 112-pitch masterpiece that takes him to 11-3, 3.33 for the year with 163 Ks in 135 1/3 innings.

Game 2: A pretty uninspiring performance tonight in a 6-1 loss. Walker Buehler was terrible, going 5 9 5 4 2 5 and very hittable again with the big blow a 3-run Daulton Varsho homer in the 4th to make it 4-1. The offense got some baserunners against Justus Sheffield thanks to 5 walks, but grounded into 4 (!) double plays, killing potential rally after potential rally. Their lone run came in the 1st on the typical Brujan single, stolen base, Wander infield single and Meadows sac fly. DL Hall pitched 3 scoreless innings with 2 walks and 5 Ks, and Mitchell Verburg was awful again, allowing 3 hits and a run in the 9th. He'll be heading down to Durham for Ian Hamilton as I've lost my patience with him.

August 25: Optioned P Mitchell Verburg to AAA Durham, activated P Ian Hamilton from his rehab assignment at AAA Durham.

Verburg is probably back up on September 1 when we have roster expansion.

Game 3: For the longest time it looked like the Rays would waste an absolutely brilliant performance from Matt Manning but single runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th allowed them to pull out a 3-2 come-from-behind walk-off win over Seattle at the Trop. Manning went 7 3 2 1 0 11 with the damage against him a first inning HR from Mike Brosseau and an unearned run in the 3rd when a Brujan error led to a Brosseau sac fly. Nick Margevicius was giving the Rays the usual lefty fits until the 7th, when Brandon Marsh doubled home Alec Bohm. Will Smith pitched a perfect 9th against 3 lefties, and the Rays tied it in the 8th when Keibert Ruiz singled in Wander who had doubled. Jasseel De La Cruz pitched a perfect 9th inning with a whiff, and the wildness of Seattle closer Taylor Guilbeau enabled the Rays to pull it out. With one out Nick Schnell singled, went to second on a wild pitch, and then to third on a Marsh single. With Vidal Brujan at the plate, Guilbeau threw a second wild pitch to allow Schnell to score, and the Trop went crazy. De La Cruz picked up his first win of the season for his efforts, and the Rays ended up taking 5 of 6 from Seattle on the season.

Team record: 83-43. Next up: An off day, then the Blue Jays come to town for 3.
