To my eye they are the same person, namely Kid Gleason. I don't see Bill Gleason on the Missing Players list so perhaps this is an oversight.

A person familiar with the Sporting News photo archives (years ago when they were intact) once informed me that they contained a photo of the Bill Gleason who debuted in 1890. It's possible that he was mistaken, because Bill G. Gleason, debut year 1882, was the player from St. Louis and he spent most of his career with the St. Louis Browns of the American Association (major league). Nevertheless, it's a lead that might be worth pursuing.
Lindenwood University in the St. Louis area has recently acquired the remnants of the Sporting News research archives. Whether those files include photos I do not know. The announcement is on the following webpage:
