Not sure what happens to live cards, but for the tournaments I suggest looking at the rosters of the winning teams. You will see that there is a pattern of mostly non-live cards with high contact/defense for position players and high consistency for pitchers (or insane stuff numbers). At least that is my experience. Also, the highest overall players are not always the best for tournaments.
