Those are both good guesses but no cigar. Here are some hints:

The first player was born in New York and played his entire MLB career for one team. When he retired in 2004 (did not play in 1972) he had a career wRC+ of 147 and 5 Silver Slugger awards to his name.

The second was a switch hitter who played six positions in his career but never DH. His middle name is Edward and he played more than 100 games in 1972.

I found that since the two vertical cards make a narrower image than one vertical one horizontal the game stretches the image to fit the same footprint making the cards appear wider. Maybe thats what happened to the template you're using. I think I fixed the issue by telling the game to generate a wider image with blank space to the right of the back of the card.
