You are referring to my Most Popular Player Award. Here are the notes that I keep on that:

Most Popular Player Award and JAWS

For Most Popular Player, customize Popularity Info view by adding Personality ratings, Professional Years, and JAWS. Select All Players and filter by league. Extremely Popular player with highest JAWS wins. (Sort by JAWS and select first three Extremely Popular players on the list for win, place, and show.)

Including personality traits and professional years in the view is useful if there is a tie or if the results are close enough that the award could go to a more deserving player when these parameters are taken into account.

JAWS: In order to calculate a player’s JAWS rating, statisticians calculate a player’s lifetime WAR value. After that, they rank his seasons played in the majors by WAR value, and isolate his seven best seasons. Then, they add his WAR figures from those seven seasons and average the result with his lifetime WAR total. The resulting number is a player’s JAWS.

The award can change hands depending on how well the contestants played in the season just ended, if they are tracking similar JAWS numbers. Or, a player can enjoy a personal dynasty for a number of years which can be pleasing to see.

Below is a screenshot of the custom Most Popular Player view with a filter applied for national Extremely Popular players and sorted by JAWS. The personality columns are there in case tiebreakers are needed. This is not the Manual Awards screen - it's too early yet for that - but the view will be the same there. It looks like Schmit (AL) and Baudendistel (NL) are going to win the award again.
