Do you sim your games? I'm pretty much a noob to FHM, but played hockey competitively through college. I agree with the previous that tactics seem critical. In my first full season, I figured I'd play through each game of the season (Challenge mode/Unemployed/Unknown & HC/GM in Czech Chance Liga) to get a feel for how things function. I've experimented with the AI setting up my organization and letting my assistant choose the lines. During my pre-season, it was a mixed bag...got completely blown out a couple games, then had some fair performances. Fast forward to almost mid-season (Chance Liga has an odd schedule/playoff system with top six teams making it to quarterfinals, 6-10 play round robin for last to "wild card" teams) where I know my players better, and have chosen my own lines/goaltenders. My team is also a farm team to the Czech Extraliga & that team is facing relegation, so I have the added bonus of having apparently underperforming players dumped on me from the the parent team, and some of my best performers (and prospects) being called up. I'm building my team around youth (players as young as 15), and owning their contracts seems key to control. I'm hoping at season end, the parent team will dump some of those players. Right now, we're holding our own in the battle to make the top six, though we have the second worst goals against and fourth best goal scoring (-6 differential). I often study the other teams tactics pre-game, though FHM limits what you can see (and not sure it's "cheating" or not)...and while I try to stay consistent with my team tactics, I do switch it up if my team's tactics seem a fairly risky mismatch. I also have a couple disgruntled (angry) players from the parent team who seem to cost me penalties at critical and late points of the game. It takes a fair amount of patience IMHO and since I'm a first-year.HC/GM, I'm slowly building my team around prospects too so I'm looking forward to what might happen next season, especially curious to see how FHM handles it if the parent team gets relegated from the major Czech league. Bottomline: Have fun & experiment. Sure, it's fun to win championships and do well, but it's a challenge, and some luck required.
