Can't say I disagree much with anything that you guys have put forth.

I know the standard response from the devs & mods here when people complain about the tactics is "You can let the AI handle it", but you all point out correctly that the AI makes some extremely strange decisions.

I know there are all kinds of charts and guides that people have put together to help out with setting roles and tactics, but speaking for myself, I don't want to work that hard to play a game.

I enjoyed the tactics in the version of the game where it gave you a 1 - 5 star rating for how the players on your team would execute a particular tactic, and you could just choose that tactic. I don't remember which particular version that was at this point.

In FHM4, I got so frustrated I just edited all my coaches and jacked all their ratings up to 20 so they would be the best at everything.

In 6, what I've found works for me is after training camp, I choose the players I want to dress, and then let the AI set the roles. It still makes some wonky decisions, like putting your best LW on the third line or making a player that is clearly best as a sniper a speedy forward role, but after I do that I go back in and rearrange the lines/roles to what I prefer.

It seems to work for me. I'm in my 16th season in a historical NHL game that started in 1967. I managed to win 3 straight cups in seasons 6, 7 & 8, and I'm just started to come out of a rebuild after I hung on to some of those cup winning players too long.

Personally, I think it would be nice if there were levels of tactics, like Rookie, Pro, and Advanced or something like that. Rookie could give you just the option to choose the best tactic that suits your team, and Advanced could give you all the nitty gritty minutiae if that's what you're into.
