Al playoffs

Kansas City (111-51) vs Toronto (96-66). Kansas City 9-3 vs Toronto during the regular season.

Kansas City looks like 1993's best team. They had the best record by 11 games. They had the best run differential by 175 runs. Only two other teams (Los Angeles and Toronto) outscored their opponents by more than 175 runs. The Royals were dominant.

Offensively, they lead the AL is almost everything: runs scored (1055 more than 100 more than the next highest scoring team), wOBA, batting average, OBP, and SLG. They were second in home runs. 4th in stolen bases and base running. Dominant.

CF Lenny Dykstra (167 wRC+ and 9 WAR) was their best player. C Darren Dauton (151 and 7.2) and 2b Tony Phillips (150 and 7.7) were almost as good. No regular had a wRC+ lower than Mike Pagliarulo's 101.

The pitching and defense was almost as good. They gave up the fewest runs in the league and were first in pitcher WAR. Their defense was second in Zone Rating and sixth in effeciency.

Brett Saberhagen (189 ERA+, 52 FIP-, 9.2 WAR) and Kevin Appier (160 ERA+, 62 FIP-, 7.7 WAR) headed up the starting rotation. John Smily (109, 87. 3.5) was also solid. Jim Pittsley (141, 95, .9) between the rotation and bullpen will be the 4th starter in the playoffs replacing Tom Gordon (who was injured in July). The relievers, Michael Jackson; Hipolito Pichardo; Gene Nelson; and Steve Farr all had FIP-'s below 75.

Toronto was also very good offensively. Second in runs scored and wOBA to the Royals. They were lead by 1B John Olerud (180 wRC+ 8.2 WAR). DH Fred McGriff (149 and 5.6), LF Julio Franco (128 and 4.4) and C Don Slaught (120 and 3.5) are the other main offensive threats.

The pitching and defense were also very good, but behind the Royals'. They were second (to the Royals) in runs allowed. And fourth in pitcher WAR. They weren't helped by their defense which was 9th in both Zone Rating and Efficiency.

Jose Rijo (142 ERA+, 67 FIP-, 7.0 WAR) is the unquestioned ace of the staff. He's joined by Pat Hentgen (110, 89, 3.0), Todd Stottlemyer (106, 93, 2.8) and Mike Moore (114, 99, 1.7). Closer Xavier Hernandez (165, 60, 2.0) and Jesse Orosco (227, 67, 1.1) are the best in the bullpen.
