Dodgers playoff roster

Who are we bringing with us to face the Cubs?

Most of the decisions well be obvious

Catchers Mike Piazza and Darren Fletcher
Infielders Jon Valentin, Gary Gaetti, Scott Fletcher, Jose Offerman and Chris Donnels
Outfielders Rickey Henderson, Devon White, Cory Snyder, Bill Bean and Mike Huff
Starting Pitchers Mark Langston, Tim Belcher, Ramon Martinez, Orel Hershiser and Pedro Astacio
Relievers John Wetteland, Rod Beck, Jim Gott, Kent Mercker and Tony Fossas

That makes 22.

Non-pitchers who are on the bubble: 1B Dave Hollins, OF Billy Ashley, OF JT Bruett, C Carlos Hernandez
With Bonilla on the IL and Hollins not hitting all year we are short a first baseman. Snyder can play there, but then who plays right field? A platoon of Bean and Huff? Billy Ashley? Do we platoon Donnels and Ashley at 1B? Move Piazza to first and let Fletcher get most of the catching duties?

The Cubs' lone left-handed starter is Greg Swindell. Swindell is a finesse pitcher who doesn't K many and hardly ever walks anyone. That's not a good matchup for Mike Huff who posted a .374 OBP with just a .250 batting average. It might be a chance for Billy Ashley to take some cuts. Dave Hollins had a huge split this year (.366 vs L, .277 vs R) and his ratings back it up.

We'll be bringing all 5 starters. But, which 4 should start? Langston and Belcher for sure. The other three are similar. The Cubs offense is based off getting on base, and were 3rd in the NL in walks. Hershiser limits walks the best and Ramon walks the most, so that's a consideration.

For the bullpen, the Cubs have 3 excellent left-handed hitters (Johnson, Anderson and Grace) who hit at the top of their order. So another left-handed reliever could be important.

We have Mike Munoz, Jim Poole, John O'Donoghue and Angel Miranda as lefties. None pitched very well in limited MLB time this year.

Mike Christopher, Darren Holmes, Pedro Martinez and David Nied are right-handed possibilities.

After much deliberation, we decide to add Dave Hollins, Billy Ashley and Pedro Martinez to the playoff roster for the 1st round vs the Cubs.
