August 23-25, 2027: at Seattle (3)

Game 1: Just one of those nights as the Mariners crushed the Rays 11-1, hitting 6 homers off Tampa Bay pitching in the process. Matt Manning was the victim of 4 of them as he just didn't have it tonight, going 5.1 7 6 6 2 5. Aaron Ashby and Jack Filby each gave up one of their own in relief. And things weren't better on the other side of the ball either as the bats could only muster 4 hits, 2 of which came in the 2nd inning when they scored their only run on a Nate Clark RBI single. Following Clark's single Julio Cedillo got his MLB hit in his first at-bat, and fittingly it was an infield hit. In the "another day, another injury" department, after hitting a double Hunter Bishop had to leave with back tightness and will be DtD for 6 days. We'll probably just leave him on the bench. Also Keston Hiura's hitting streak was snapped at 22 tonight, as he drew a walk in his final plate appearance of the game.

MLB note: Superstar pitcher Jack Flaherty of St. Louis, the best pitcher in baseball and who was threatening Bob Gibson's ERA record earlier this season, tore his UCL and will be out about a year. He had gone 7 1/3 more shutout innings tonight in a win but had to leave with the injury. His remarkable 2027 ends 15-4, 1.42 with a 24/203 BB/K ratio in 183 innings. He should easily with the Cy Young, but it could be his last. Just terrible news.

August 24: Activated P Liam Hendriks from the 15-day IL, optioned P Cole Patten to AAA Durham.

Game 2: The Rays bounced back from last night's drubbing to handle the Mariners 6-2. A 3-run first inning and some pretty good pitching from Jack Leiter led the way. After being held hitless and losing his 22-game hitting streak, Keston Hiura singled to lead off the game, sparking a rally that saw Nate Clark and Triston Casas get RBI singles and Jhon Diaz walk with the bases loaded. Meanwhile Leiter was in command through 5, only allowing a Rece Hinds (who hit 2 of Seattle's 6 last night) homerun. Judson Fabian added an RBI single in the 4th to make it 4-1, and Leiter ended up running into some trouble in the 6th and should have been out of it but Wander Franco misplayed a popup for a single that made it 4-2 and with the bases loaded and a lefty due up, Evan Godwin came on and got a big strikeout to thwart the Mariner rally. A double play grounder enabled the Rays to make it 5-2, and Godwin pitched through the 7th and got the first out in the 8th before Daniel Espino took over. Diaz hit HR #8 in the 9th to make it 6-2 so Espino stayed on to finish the game and pick up save #1 as a Ray. Leiter went 5.2 7 2 2 1 6 but it should have been 5.2 6 1 1 1 6. Either way he's earned another start. The Yankees lost to Baltimore so the magic # drops to 23.

Game 3: Well it was the Rays' turn to be Meat Loafed as Seattle scored in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Rays 2-1. Christian Little was brilliant again for naught, going 7 5 1 1 1 9 with his only blemish a Mike Brosseau homer in the 1st. Unfortunately the offense could only manage 5 hits for the game with Triston Casas singling in Nate Clark after Clark had walked and stole second in the 6th. Jack Filby had a scoreless 8th but Daniel Espino continues to disappoint as he walked Brosseau to lead off the ninth, gave up a double to Jarred Kelenic and then a single to Evan White to lose the game. No reduction of the magic # as the Yankees won.

Team record: 84-49. Next up: A day off and then back home to face the Twins for 3.
