September 20-23, 2027: at Baltimore (4)
Game 1: Yordan Alvarez had another monster game and Jack Leiter won his sixth straight start as the Rays walloped the Orioles 9-1. Alvarez, who homered twice yesterday, went (Camden) yard again in the 1st inning for #32, shortly after Keston Hiura led off the game with HR #15. Alvarez then singled in a run in the 2nd, doubled, and had another RBI single in the 5th in a 4-5, 3 RBI day. Leiter, meanwhile, keeps getting better as the season goes on and went 6 5 1 0 0 9 on 97 pitches with the only run against coming on a 2-out Triston Casas error in the 5th. Leiter has only allowed 11 runs over his last 36 innings, making him 6-0, 2.75 over that stretch. Hayden Johns struck out 5 in 2 innings of relief and Blake Money struck out the side in the 9th, giving Rays pitching a total of 17 strikeouts. Casas made up for the error by reaching the 20-HR plateau for the first time with a solo shot in the 9th. The Yankees lost, so they and Baltimore remain tied for the two wild card slots. The White Sox won to pull within 1/2 game of the idle Twins in the AL Central. In the NL, Washington beat Atlanta in their first of their 4-game series, pulling the Nats within 2 of the Braves for the division lead and putting them up 1/2 on idle Arizona in the wild card and a full game up on Milwaukee, which lost tonight.
Durham Playoff Update: The Durham Bulls train kept-a-rollin' in Game 1 of the IL Championship Series as they blew out Rochester 8-1 behind another gem from Andy Aparicio. Following up his 8 3 1 1 1 13 from Round 1, the righty went 6 4 1 1 0 6 but ran a lot of deep counts so it took him 109 pitches. The hitting heroes were Carlos Perez, 2-3 with a double and 3 RBI, and Mike Lammers, 3-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI and who is now 8-15 with a HR and 3 RBI in the postseason. Luis Berdin kept hitting, too, going 2-4 with an RBI. Sometimes I think this Durham could compete in MLB, maybe winning 70-75 games at least. The bats would play, the question would be the pitching, especially the bullpen which is good but not great. Anyway, they'll look to make it 2 in a row behind Emerson Hancock tomorrow night.
Game 2: Tonight was the more typical Camden Yards game and the Orioles knocked off the Rays 9-7. Matt Manning was pretty bad, but the Rays had staked him to a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the 5th and we tried to see if he could make it through the 5th. No such luck as he gave up 4 runs, capped by a Greg Diechmann 3-run homer. Liam Hendriks came on and walked the bases loaded and gave up an infield single to make it 9-6 Baltimore. The Rays had men on 2nd and 3rd with 0 out in both the 6th and 7th, but could only manage one run out of those situations combined on a Nate Clark groundout. Mike Bayley, Evan Godwin and Jack Filby combined for 3 scoreless innings in relief. Keston Hiura had a nice day with the bat, hitting HR #16 and getting an RBI double, Andrew Knizner had a 2-run single, and Julio Cedillo continued to hit, going 2-4 with an RBI and another double, his 10th in 26 games. Also in those 26 games he's already been worth 1.0 WAR so I'm feeling a lot better about him being the man next year. The guy he's replacing, Brandon Marsh, is due back tomorrow from his injury and will get most of the play the rest of the way to shake the rust off before the playoffs start.
Playoff race update: The Yankees won, so they and Baltimore stay tied for the two wild cards. With Boston and Seattle 4 back, it's just a question of who gets to host the game. More importantly, the White Sox and Twins both won so Minnesota remains 1/2 game up in the Central, and over in the NL the Braves beat the Nationals to put them 3 games up with 5 left, so that race is probably done unless Washington wins the next 2 from Atlanta. Milwaukee beat St. Louis in 13 and Arizona lost, so in the NL wild card it's Milwaukee and Washington tied for the top two spots with Arizona 1/2 game behind.
Durham Playoff Update: The Bulls are one win away from their 4th IL title in 6 seasons after they beat Rochester 7-4 to go up 2-0 in their best-of-5 championship series. Mike Lammers had a 3-run HR in the 4th which was followed by a Carlos Perez longball, both off rehabbing Twins pitcher Zac Gallen, to key the win. Chris Sharp added a 2-run HR later. Emerson Hancock was solid, going 6.1 9 3 3 0 9, beaten by a couple of homers. Christian Chamberlain and Cole Patten, who pitched for the Rays earlier this year, provided setup relief for Tyler Gough, who had a 1-2-3 9th for the save. Alec Sachais will try to make it a true clean sweep of the playoffs for Durham in two nights.
September 22: Activated OF Brandon Marsh from the 10-day IL.
Game 3: The Rays scored 4 times with 2 out in the 9th to come from behind and beat Baltimore 6-4, but the real news was a couple of their star players suffering injuries. The more serious one is to Christian Little, who was making his final start of the regular season tonight. He had to leave in 6th with another herniated disc injury and will be out 3 weeks. This will put him out for the ALDS and possibly the ALCS should they make it and makes Jack Leiter the likely 4th starter for the playoffs. The other injury came in the 9th inning to Wander Franco. As he doubled in the 6th and final run, he pulled up at 2nd with a calf soreness. It's a minimal DtD injury that he'll have to deal with for 10 days. His regular season is now over but it won't keep him out of the lineup in the ALDS. In good injury news Brandon Marsh returned from the IL and said "rust? what rust?" by hitting his 13th HR of the year with a man on in the 3rd in his first at-bat back. Little gave that lead back and then some when Jo Adell took him deep in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2, and he went 5.2 3 3 3 4 7 before having to leave with his injury. He finishes the year 14-7, 3.12 with an AL-best 283 Ks in 199.1 innings. Hayden Johns gave up a homer in the 7th to make it 4-2 and that's where we stood until the 9th. Hunter Bishop led off with a single, went to 2nd on a grounder, and Keibert Ruiz singled to put men on 1st and 3rd. Nick Gonzales struck out for the 2nd out, but Marsh walked to load the bases and Oriole closer Joldanny Genao threw a wild pitch to bring Bishop home. Keston Hiura then delivered a 2-run double to give the Rays the lead, and Wander delivered his double to score Hiura. Evan Godwin picked up the win with a 1-2-3 8th and JDLC pitched around a 2-out walk and whiffed pinch-hitter Adley Rustchman to end the game and grab save #24.
Playoff race update: The Yankees won to go 1 up on Baltimore for the right to host the WC game, the White Sox won while the Twins lost in San Diego, putting Chicago 1/2 game on top and knocking Minnesota off its perch for the first time since April. In the NL, Atlanta beat Washington to clinch a tie for the division, Milwaukee won and Arizona lost, putting the Brewers in the first wild card spot, 1 game ahead of Washington, who in turn is 1/2 game ahead of Arizona.
Game 4: The Rays dropped the final game of this series 5-3 to Baltimore, but more importantly nobody else got hurt. Mack Anglin wasn't at his best, surrendering a 3-2 lead in the 5th with a couple of runs allowed (Cadyn Grenier was his nemesis today with two triples off him) and ending 5 7 4 4 2 2 to finish his regular season at 14-6, 3.38 with a fine 36/160 BB/K ratio in 175 innings. Blake Money pitched a couple of scoreless innings, but Jose Alvarado gave up a run in the 8th. The offense came from Keston Hiura with another RBI double in the 3rd and Cole Tucker's first Rays homer, a 2-run shot in the 5th. Brandon Marsh continues to look good in his return as he was 2-3 with a triple.
Team record: 103-56. Next up: We close out the regular season with a weekend series at Yankee Stadium as Shane McClanhan gets one last crack at win #20 tomorrow night.
Playoff race update: Minnesota lost a heartbreaker in San Diego, giving up 2 runs in the bottom of the 10th after taking the lead in the top of the inning so they fall a full game behind Chicago. The White Sox go to Detroit for the weekend while the Twins travel to Kansas City. In the NL, Atlanta beat Washington to clinch the NL East, leaving the wild card race as the only thing up in the air. Arizona was off but Milwaukee won in San Francisco, putting them 2 games up in the first wild card over both Washington and Arizona so the Brewers are looking good.
Durham Playoff Update: The Bulls win! The Bulls win! In a thoroughly dominant run through the IL playoffs, the Bulls ended sweeping both rounds thanks to an 8-2 win over Rochester to take their 4th IL title in the last 6 years. They outscored Gwinnett and Rochester 47-15 over the 6 games and never scored fewer than 6 runs in a game. This has to be one of the best teams the IL has ever seen. Luis Berdin (who else?) got the scoring going with an RBI single in the 1st, Chris Sharp had an RBI double to make it 2-0, and Shane Sasaki belted a solo homer in the 2nd to make it 3-0. And in the third they got two on ahead of Mike Lammers, who drilled yet another homer to make it 6-0. Lammers was MVP of the finals after hitting 2 HR and driving in 8 in the three games. Both he and Berdin ended the 6-game playoff with 3 HR and 9 RBI while Sharp, Berdin and Sasaki all had 3 hits tonight. And they were just as dominant on the mound as Alec Sachais went 6 6 1 1 0 6, giving up only his obligatory longball. Cole Patten pitched the 9th and found himself on the bottom of the dogpile.
