July 2298 - News and Notes - July 15

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

15 July 2298 - Noob Powers Silver Shroud to 12-4 Win

The 12-4 Fort Hagen win over Concord was due in large part to Sam Noob. The Silver Shroud right fielder was 3 for 3 with a home run, 2 doubles, and a walk, while scoring 3 times and driving in 5. Fort Hagen now has a record of 39-32 with the win.

It could have been a different outcome for Fort Hagen, had it not been for Jim Tiller, the top prospect . Tiller contributed a run-scoring double in the top of the first inning to put Fort Hagen up, 1-0.

"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Noob told the Fort Hagen Bulletin.

15 July 2298 - Iddings Fans 15 Red Rockets

In a performance to behold, Bruce Iddings was masterful today in the Hancocks 12-4 victory over the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets. He had them batting the breeze most of the day. In a strong outing, Iddings registered 15 strikeouts in the ballgame, gave up 8 hits and 2 walks. The 15 strikeouts sets the South Charles Association and ties the CBO record for a single game, breaking his own SCA record of 14 set on April 26.

To this point in the season Iddings has 13 wins and 2 losses and a 3.14 ERA. With 143 strikeouts on the season, he is first in the SCA and second in the CBO behind Salem's Mike Cartrette (156). Cartrette also had a 15-strikeout performance, his on April 27. Cartrette also struck out 15 on 29 July 2297. The three games named in this article by Iddings and Cartrette are the only three 15+ strikeout games in CBO history.

Despite Iddings' record-setting performance, Jumper Hayes was named the game MVP. The second baseman was 2 for 4 with a triple, a home run, two runs scored, and four RBI.

15 July 2298 - Justin Sphinx Blanks Sunshine Tidings, 12-0

There was no spell, no black magic -- just good pitching.

Justin Sphinx of the Starlight Lady Killers blanked the Sunshine Tidings Chemists, 12-0, at ArcJet Systems Stadium today, and he did it the old-fashioned way. After finishing the 6-hit, complete-game shutout, he was all smiles.

"I threw a lot of my pitches for strikes in this game," Sphinx said. "I mixed it up and tried keeping these guys off balance."

Sphinx walked 2 and struck out 4 in the victory.

"He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes and we never capitalized on any of his mistakes," Chemists manager Cozy Burmaster said later.

In season stats Sphinx shows a 10-2 record in 14 games, 98.1 innings, 78 strikeouts and a 3.11 ERA.

RF Damani Beebe was outstanding at the plate. He was 3 for 6 with two home runs, three runs scored, and six RBI. Hubris McBride also hit his 14th home run of the season at the leadoff position. His 14 home runs leads the Lady Killers.

15 July 2298 - Ratican Rips 2 Home Runs in 12-7 Knuckle Punchers Triumph

Behind a fine performance from Matt Ratican, the Roxbury Knuckle Punchers knocked off the Vault 81 Dwellers, 12-7. Ratican was 3 for 5 with 2 home runs. He drove in 7 runs and scored twice for the Knuckle Punchers. The triumph makes Roxbury 19-52.

Early in the game, Ratican had a 3-run home run for Roxbury. It was his 13th home run of the season and put the Knuckle Punchers on top, 4-1.

"It was a solid team effort," said Ratican after the game.

15 July 2298 - Party Boys Stay Hot, Beat Bloodbugs, 6-3

Nordhagen Beach picked up a win at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium, bumping off the County Crossing Bloodbugs, 6-3. Pitcher Julian Shed was a major reason the Party Boys emerged victorious. The winning pitcher was Shed, now 8-7. He tossed 7.1 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 0 and fanning 6. Night Demon Archacki notched his 15th save in 17 chances.

The outcome was still in doubt with two out in the top of the second inning, but Shed was able to pitch out of a jam. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and County Crossing trailing 1-0, Shed retired Slim Chembaker, who struck out.

The North Charles Association Brotherhood League-leading Party Boys are 45-26.
