April 17-19, 2028: vs Cleveland (3)
Game 1: In what could be a turning point for the season (oh who am I kidding, it's all 1s and 0s), the Rays hit 3 homers in the bottom of the 9th to turn a 5-2 loss into a 6-5 win in the most improbable of comebacks. It was looking like a typical 2028 Rays game with mediocre starting pitching and anemic hitting as they were down 5-2 with only 5 hits on the board. Gabriel Rodriguez came on to save it for Cleveland, and he walked Bobby Witt Jr to lead off the inning (Witt's 3rd BB of the game) and then surrendered a 2-run blast to Judson Fabian, his first of the year and after being moved down in the lineup. After pinch-hitter Isaac DeLeon popped out, Joe Barker, who picked up his first MLB hit in his previous at-bat, ripped his first MLB homer to tie the game. And then Keibert Ruiz, dropped to the 9-hole as part of the lineup shakeup, drilled one into the RCF stands to win it and send the Trop into delirium. It wasn't all good news, though. Mack Anglin was apparently over his sore elbow with no injury designation and started, and pitched alright until the 5th when he put 2 on via walk and surrendered a 3-run HR to Austin Hendrick. He then had to leave with a recurrence of the sore elbow and this time will be out 5 weeks after going 4.2 6 4 4 3 7. Hayden Johns looked good again over 1 2/3, Evan Godwin pitched a scoreless inning, and then Blake Money gave up a run but pitched through the 9th to pick up the win. We'll need a starter for Saturday in Toronto so we'll see who gets called up. Earlier in the game Yordan Alvarez hit #4 and another run scored a wild pitch to give the Rays an early 2-0 lead before Anglin lost it.
April 18: Placed P Mack Anglin on the 15-day IL with a sore elbow, recalled P Jeremy Bienick from AAA Durham.
Rated the #48 prospect in baseball by BNN, Bienick is a power reliever who could be our closer of the future, although he's thought of also as a potential frontline starter. He's at 60 stuff right now but has 80 potential, and will be up for a few days before we probably call up Alec Sachais to start in place of Anglin this weekend.
Game 2: Holy crap, they did it again. Trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th, Judson Fabian homered for the second straight night in the bottom of the 9th, this time tying the game and setting it up for the Rays to win in 11, 3-2 when Joe Barker singled home Jhon Diaz who had doubled to lead off the inning. This marked the first time all season the Rays have won consecutive games, and put an end to a 13-game run of alternating wins and losses. Before Fabian's heroics (I guess he's adapted to the 7-spot) it looked like another brilliant Christian Little performance would be wasted. He gave up a single to start the 1st and then Austin Hendrick homered for the second straight game to put the Rays behind 2-0. Little did not allow a hit after that and in fact Rays pitching did not allow another hit to Cleveland the rest of the game over the next 10 1/3 innings. Little left 7 2 2 2 1 12 and now has 44 Ks in 24 innings. Diaz also doubled in the 7th and scored on Keibert Ruiz's single to cut the Cleveland lead to 2-1. Jack Filby, Daniel Espino, Jose Alvarado and finally Jasseel De La Cruz combined for 4 hitless innings of relief with JDLC picking up his 1st win of the season.
Game 3: Runs (and hits) remained scarce at the Trop tonight, but the Rays didn't have to pull it out in the bottom of the 9th again today as they beat Cleveland 2-0 to sweep the series on a combined 1-hitter from Jack Leiter, Daniel Espino and Jasseel De La Cruz. After Rays pitching had no-hit Cleveland for the last 10 1/3 innings yesterday, Leiter extended that no-hit streak to 16 innings with 5 2/3 of his own before Gerardo Perdomo dunked one in front of Judson Fabian in RF. Leiter was dominating, looking like Christian Little in the early innings and ending 7 1 0 0 1 8 to even his record at 2-2, 3.65. Espino struck out the side in the 8th and JDLC had a perfect 9th for save #4. After not being the dominating short reliever we thought we were getting last season, Espino has been brilliant this year with 14 whiffs in 6 1/3 scoreless innings. The offense struggled again, only managing 4 hits, but they did enough. Fabian stayed hot by singling in Bobby Witt Jr, who had walked, in the 4th and Yordan Alvarez launched #5 in the bottom of the 8th to make things slightly more comfortable.
Speaking of no-hitters, Hunter Barco was pressed into action for Durham last night to take the place of Alec Sachais, who will be coming up to the big club, and all he did was take a no-hitter into the 9th before losing it with one out. He still stayed in and completed the 1-hit shutout, walking 2 and striking out 9 as Durham beat Gwinnett 5-0 as they're off to a 5-1 start.
Team record: 9-10. Next up: A chance to cut into the division lead as they play 4 games in Toronto.
