The View from the BMU

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

19 July 2298 – General Atomics Galleria

On certain Tuesdays for the 2297 and 2298 seasons, we will feature one of the settlements where teams in the Boston Minor Union play.

In our eighteenth trip around the BMU, we will go the pre-War shopping center run entirely by robots, General Atomics Galleria.

Robots Be Crazy

According to a terminal entry at the Galleria, "A pre-War relic, the galleria was meant to be a demonstration of what a town's commercial district would look like if it were run entirely by robots. Inhabited only by Mr. Handies and Mr. Gutsies of varying personalities, the location is entirely oblivious to the war.

"Just prior to the war, a grand opening supervisor was meant to arrive, whom [Nate Howard] masquerade[d] as in order to gain further access to the location. A manual password override can be found at the terminal in the back of the bowling alley, while the prior supervisor's password keycard can be found in the director's office to the left of their desk.

"If one reads the myriad of terminals, it can be learned that it is suspected that the previous supervisor was killed by the director, with an advisory that the park should be shut down permanently.

"The various shops around the galleria remain open, but will not operate normally until the grand re-opening event has been officially triggered. Due to errors in the Mr. Handy robots' programming, many interactions can result in the shopkeepers and inhabitants attacking the Sole Survivor, resulting in the destruction of robots that would have otherwise become vendors."

Nate was able to use some acquired hacking skills to tame the robots at the location, eventually turning the shops and bowling alley into a nice escape from Boston in the Commonwealth. Human who settled the area worked as suppliers, bankers, repairers, and other needed services that the robots cannot supply.
