News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

8 August 2298 - Combs NCA's Best of the Week

One of the league's most exciting young players, Ryan Combs of the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys earned himself North Charles Association Player of the Week honors with a standout performance in last week's games.

For the week the 21-year-old center fielder had a lofty .545 average (12-for-22), collecting 1 home run, 5 RBIs and 7 runs scored.

This year Combs has hit at a .348 pace and produced 37 RBIs, 3 home runs and scored 65 runs.

8 August 2298 - SCA Player of the Week Goes to Ashfire of Atom

So far in his young career, Will Ashfire has kept a low profile, but after his performance at the plate last week, he attracted the notice of the rest of the South Charles Association in a big way as he was named the Player of the Week today for his efforts.

The 20-year-old Atom Cats first baseman hit at a torrid .474 clip as he collected 9 hits in 19 at-bats, 5 home runs, 12 RBIs and 8 runs scored.

This year Ashfire has socked 91 hits in 323 at-bats for a .282 average with 27 home runs. He is getting on base at a .399 pace and his totals also include 84 RBIs and 68 runs scored.

8 August 2298 - BMU: Breakheart Banks's Bellingham CA's Best

It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the Commonwealth Association, but last week Governor Bellingham of the Breakheart Banks Behemoths reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Bellingham rocked opposing pitching for a .474 average (9-for-19), 1 home run and 5 RBIs to come away with the award.

Hitting .277 to date, Bellingham has 7 home runs and 31 RBIs. He has played in 62 games.

8 August 2298 - BMU: Lead Bellies Beak MA Hitter of the Week

Blue Beak is respected by most Boston Common Lead Bellies fans for his no-frills style of play. The 20-year-old third baseman went about his business with vigor last week to grab the Massachusetts Association Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .533 average (8-for-15) with 1 home run, 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored.

This season in 56 games, Beak has hit at a .307 clip with 62 hits, 7 home runs, 26 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

8 August 2298 - CBO News: Draft Pool Revealed

Commonwealth Baseball Organization announced the 2298 amateur draft pool today, a scant 90 days in advance of the actual draft. For scouts, it is the toughest challenge of the season, trying to come up with an educated guess as to what a young man in his late teens or early twenties is going to do at the professional level a good five years down the road, at best. Some will go on gut instincts; some will rely on years of experience; but most will find it disconcerting how much their team is beholden to Lady Luck. Choose well and they are geniuses; choose poorly and they are unemployed.

A complete rundown of the draft list is available upon request and will be available 90 days before the draft.

The early favorites to be high picks are the following:
1. Ajani Peacock, 19 year-old 3B
2. Gunner Eyesocket, 19 year-old LF
3. Chase Doctorman, 18 year-old 1B
4. Tib Shorthop, 18 year-old SS
5. Scruffy Taguchi, 18 year-old RHP
6. Cy Thompson, 19 year-old 3B
7. Kasey Sloc, 19 year-old 1B
8. Mace Pageturner, 19 year-old CF
9. Cornelius Humperdink IV, 19 year-old CF
10. Otto Krappe, 18 year-old 2B

The official OSA Mock Draft will be released on the day of the draft.
