News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

13 August 2298 - Hancocks Clip Cats, 9-8, in 10

The Goodneighbor Hancocks bested the Atom Cats, 9-8, at Third Rail Stadium at S. Boston HS. Bryan Assman was one of the standouts. He hit 2 home runs, while scoring 3 times and driving in 5. Goodneighbor is now riding a 3-game win streak.

Goodneighbor won the game in the bottom of the tenth inning. With no outs and Jake Williams on the mound for Atom, right fielder Good Don Duck hit a dramatic solo home run, bringing Hancocks fans to their feet.

"We got the victory," said Duck. "That's all that matters at the end of the day."

13 August 2298 - Lexington Befuddled by Bertha in 8-0 Whitewash

In an impressive outing, Tony Bertha whitewashed the Lexington Synths 8-0.

"I'm getting a lot more downward movement instead of side to side. That side-to-side stuff can get hit a long way," said Bertha, who is throwing with more of an overhand motion. "It's not rocket science. It was just a little adjustment, but that's all it took."

The Sunshine Tidings hurler held Lexington scoreless, allowed 4 hits, chalked up 6 strikeouts and yielded 3 walks.

This season Bertha has worked 155 innings with 115 strikeouts en route to a 9-11 record and a 3.89 ERA.

Frank Corsica was 3 for 3 with two doubles, a run, and an RBI in the game. With the win, the Chemists have now surpassed Lexington for 5th place in the Institute League.

13 August 2298 - Knuckle Punchers Stumble Again, Lose, 13-8

The FHE Yao Guai powered past the Roxbury Knuckle Punchers, 13-8, at Atomatoys Stadium at Roxbury. Hose Wallcrawler was 4 for 5 with a double and 3 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3, to lead the charge. Roxbury now has a 6-game losing streak.

The Yao Guai got a big hit from second baseman Elijah Horne. In the top of the fifth, Horne pounded a 2-run triple to right-center. His 3rd triple of the season put the Yao Guai ahead, 8-6.

Wallcrawler told the FHE Daily: "I don't know which I enjoy more -- being a ballplayer or the perks that come with being a ballplayer."

13 August 2298 - Party Boys Hang 6-3 Loss on Ghouls, Clinch Series

The 6-3 Nordhagen Beach win over The Slog was due largely to Michael Fogcrawler. The Party Boys left fielder went 2 for 4 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Derek Gist, the winner, goes to 8-1. He allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts over 7 innings. The North Charles Association Brotherhood League-leading Party Boys are 58-34, five up on the Ghouls in a must-win series for both teams.

Nordhagen Beach took a 4-2 lead on Fogcrawler's 2nd triple of the season. The run-scoring triple, which he hit off Edwin Mass in the bottom of the sixth, propelled Nordhagen Beach to the win.

"I'm glad we can make our fans happy with a win," Fogcrawler told the Nordhagen Beach News.

13 August 2298 - Shroud Take Down Killers, 3-2, with Late Rally

Fans saw a dandy of a game between the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud and Starlight Lady Killers.

The Fort Hagen Silver Shroud faced a tough opponent in Starlight pitcher Jonathan Newman, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Valentine Detective Agency Field by a final score of 3-2. Newman went 7 innings and allowed 1 run. Curtis Thriceshot was credited with the save, his 32nd in 33 tries.

Fort Hagen took a 3-2 lead on Jim Tiller's 47th double of the season. The 2-run double, which Tiller hit in the top of the ninth, left Starlight pitcher Larry Undertaker visibly frustrated.

"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Fort Hagen skipper Mark Andersen.

The win for the Silver Shroud lifted their record to 54-38, now a game up on Abernathy for the Institute League lead and seven up on the Lady Killers with just 16 games to play. These two teams conclude their season series tomorrow at 1:05 PM. Fort Hagen is currently 7-4 in the matchup.
