12 September 2298 - From the Publick Occurrences Archives
Hi, Publick Occurrences readers.
Our home team, The Diamond City Swatters, made the playoffs for the first time in team history. Yesterday afternoon, pitcher X10-44 Mannson was named the Game MVP in the Swatters' first-ever playoff victory.
Today I want to continue our feature of a string of stories that indicate the change of Diamond City from a place of fear and loathing to an open city welcoming all. This story string takes us back to the first change in 2229; to 2287 when my sister, Piper Wright, wrote an article about the Institute history in Diamond City; to 2288 and the change; all the way to today in 2298 when Diamond City has become a beacon of the peaceful and equal Commonwealth.
Below is the third story in this string of stories by Piper. Please enjoy this Publick Occurrences classic, "MacCready Becomes Diamond City’s Mayor." In this story, Piper covered the 2288 election where Robert MacCready became mayor of Goodneighbor and immediately repealed Mayor McDonough's anti-ghoul laws. MacCready went on to change more in the city, eventually helping it to expand out of the Great Green Jewel and helping Nate Howard in his pursuits to unify the Commonwealth and bring baseball back.
The story below:
MacCready Becomes Diamond City’s Mayor
By Piper Wright
30 November 2288 - Robert MacCready will be the mayor of Diamond City for the next six years, starting tomorrow. In a landslide decision, MacCready beat out Codman Family Farms owner Clarence Codman for control of the city. Geneva Burnheart dropped out of the race last week and leant her support for MacCready. She has been named Vice Mayor during this transfer period.
One of MacCready’s first terms of business is to repeal the Anti-ghoul Decree of 2282. He has said that his main goal is to truly unite Diamond City to make it as progressive as it should be in a peaceful Commonwealth. This comes at a time where Nate Howard has been negotiating with different factions to make peace throughout the area. An announcement is expected to take place at any time.
While there is peace in most of the Commonwealth now, Diamond City’s recent reaction has been surprising. Codman’s campaign was built on testing all citizens and people who enter Diamond City for synth components. Diamond City Clinic owner Doctor Sun has said that the technology needed to perform those tests would be something only the Institute could do. That bit of information reported in Publick Occurrences may have led to the end of Codman’s campaign.
Burnheart dropped out of the race because she said she believed in MacCready’s principles of trust and unity. She said that she would have stayed in the election to make sure Codman was not elected, but she thought that she and MacCready may split votes instead, giving Codman a chance to win. As it turned out, the 80-20 split in votes made that highly unlikely. Burnheart has also stated that she would be fully committed to MacCready’s cause and be a face for the people outside the Stands.
MacCready claims he has been a mayor before, twice as a teenager. We at Publick Occurrences could not confirm that information, but we are reporting as told to us by Mayor MacCready. According to MacCready, he was once the mayor of a kids-only community in the Capital Wasteland called Little Lamplight. By his account, he was around 10 years old—approximately 2274—when he became mayor through a coup against a girl named Princess who wanted Little Lamplight to be her kingdom.
On his 16th birthday, he left Little Lamplight, as kids had to do. He started wandering the Wasteland before he met a young lady named Lucy. They became nomads and gave birth to a son, Duncan. One night, while the family slept in an abandoned metro station in the Capital Wasteland, a pack of feral ghouls attacked. Lucy died in the attack, but MacCready was able to escape with Duncan.
They ended up settling in a place north of the former District of Columbia in 2282. MacCready founded his own settlement there that he called Big Lamplight. Soon he built a nice settlement with as many fortifications as he could build up to protect Duncan, the settlers that came there, and himself. Unfortunately, Duncan came down with a disease, later identified by Curie, one of Nate’s companions and a scientist, as Limit 115, also known as the New Plague or Blue Flu. MacCready searched the Capital Wasteland for what was causing blue boils to form all over his son’s body. No one knew, so MacCready left Duncan in Big Lamplight and traveled to the Commonwealth in 2286 seeking answers.
When he arrived in the Commonwealth, he first joined up with the Gunners but soon learned that he would not be able to find his answers, so he left them in 2287. Still, they were a problem for him since people were only allowed to leave the Gunners when they were dead. Nate helped MacCready take care of his Gunners problem, though, and MacCready’s search continued. With Nate’s help, along with Curie, the cure was finally found in early 2288. MacCready left with a Minuteman crew and returned with his son in the August 2288 with a cured Duncan, now seven years old. They decided to settle in Diamond City in Nate’s home, Home Plate.
Now MacCready is the mayor of Diamond City and change for the city is imminent. We are at a time of peace for the first time in our lives. MacCready may actually make Diamond City the town we always knew it could be.
