SOUTHPORT'S JUNIOR EVANS GET THE NOD IN CLOSE PRO CUP MVP POLL
Sure his father is a Hall of Fame player and his manager, but that counts for nought in the Islandian Pro Alliance Postseason Most Valuable Player balloting... Lorne "Junior" Evans earned his prestigious honor on the diamond, leading the Southport Sun Sox to back-to-back Pro Cup trophies... Evans nudged out teammates Eddy Salem and Lynn Tobin this year for the MVP trophy, which is based on all of the postseason, not just Pro Cup Series.
Shortstop Junior Evans sparked Southport to its 5th Pro Cup in the team history with a .419 batting average in 16 games... he led the playoffs in batting average and 14 runs batted in and wound up second in runs scored with 11... the 27-year-old Evans cracked 26 hits in 62 at bats with 3 doubles, 2 triples and 2 home runs... last season Evans came in third in the postseason MVP balloting... last year's winner was pitcher Roman Littrell, who beat out another teammate twirler Eddy Salem for the trophy... in his 5 seasons in the IPA Evans is a modest .277 career batter... most of all Evans is just a winner on the baseball field... he knows how to win... Evans seems to rise to the occasion in the postseason... he sports a .339 batting average in 43 games with 4 homers, 28 RBIs and 32 runs.
Winding up a very close second again this year was Southport hurler Eddy Salem... in 5 starts the 32-year old right-hander went 4-0 and posted a strong 2.72 ERA... in 9 postseason starts Salem is 7-0 the last two seasons with a superlative 1.99 ERA.
The third spot in the postseason Most Valuable Player vote belongs to Southport's solid first baseman Lynn Tobin, who tied Evans for the most RBIs in the playoffs with 14... he also tied him for second in runs scored with 11... Tobin had a solid postseason with a .308 BA (20 for 65).
