Many around the WPK believe that Houston's veteran center fielder Lazaro Lowndes is the most likely player to be the first to the 3,000 hit career mark.
After a bit of a down season in 1978, Lowndes is off to a great start to the '79 season and yesterday he collected the 2,500th hit of his big league career. Up to this point of his career he has averaged 211 hits per 162 games so even with some expected decline with age it seems reasonable to expect that Lowndes will fairly easily get another 500 hits before calling it a quits on his career, one which looks like it will lead to eventual induction in the WPK Hall of Fame.
