May 28: Traded 24-year-old center fielder Julio Cedillo to the Cleveland Indians, getting 25-year-old minor league starting pitcher Tim Siqueiros, 24-year-old minor league starting pitcher Tim Sandstrom and 20-year-old minor league first baseman Raul Valdenegro in return.
Activated SS Ricky Widmar from his rehab assignment at AAA Durham.
Well we go from one roster jam to another. Someone had to go for Widmar and while Dane Ayers might seem like the choice, his versatility makes him a valuable backup. This leaves Cedillo, who was always going to be expendable after the acquisition and emergence of Jasson Dominguez. And what made him more expendable was the emergence of Dayle Jenkins, who's ready to play CF in majors right now as we saw earlier this season and we're seeing with his .370 performance at Durham. Plus, we're already carrying 5 OFs on the roster. If Dominguez gets hurt again, Jhon Diaz can slide over if it's short-term, and Jenkins is there if it's longer.
So what's the return? A couple of outstanding arms to start. Siqueros is a 98-100 mph power pitcher who has 60/70 (or 65/80 if you like OSA) stuff as a starter along with 55/60 movement. His only drawback is control although OSA sees 55 potential there while Metzler sees 45. Still his profile reminds me a lot of Blake Money and both scouts agree he has top-of-the-rotation potential. Sandstrom is a fairly hard-throwing lefty (94-96) with 60 stuff, 50 movement and 50 control who's either a potential #2 starter (OSA) or #3 (Metzler). Siqueros, who's been up as a reliever with Cleveland in stints the this year and last, will start at Durham while Sandstrom will go to AA Montgomery. And don't sleep on the third guy, Valdenegro, who has massive raw power and is only 20 and will probably play for our DSL team.
Of course now we have the Widmar problem. Another good problem to have but Isaac DeLeon has been so good (283/328/572 with 13 HR and 1.8 WAR to date) that he doesn't deserve to leave the lineup. DeLeon can play 3B too so we could have a Widmar-DeLeon-Witt rotation.
