April 2299 - News and Notes - April 30

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

30 April 2299 - Season Done for Kovalenko: Dave Kovalenko had to wait several agonizing days to find out his diagnosis after suffering bone chips in his elbow on 04/28/2299. Today he received word from the Warwick doctor that he would be out the rest of the year. Team officials called it a huge setback but something they would have to overcome.

In pitching stats this season Kovalenko has rung up no wins and 3 losses in 5 games. He has an ERA of 4.13 and has fanned 19 batters in 28.1 innings.

30 April 2299 - Chemists Win Thriller, 4-2

The Sunshine Tidings Chemists walked off with a big win.

A good performance from right fielder Brightsun Ramos helped the Sunshine Tidings Chemists defeat the Abernathy Adamantium, 4-2. Ramos was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once for the Chemists. The win belongs to Jumbo Cleveland in relief. His record improves to 1-0. T-Bone Heagy took the loss for Abernathy.

The game was still up for grabs in the bottom of the ninth. With two out, Ramos hit a cutter from T-Bone Heagy for a 2-run home run. The Chemists, in dramatic fashion, had a walk-off win.

"At least I did my job," Ramos said.

The win gives Sunshine Tidings a record of 11-9.

Abernathy second baseman Jim Waples came into today's game against the Sunshine Tidings Chemists on a hot streak. He left on a cold one.

The Chemists did their jobs well, beating the Abernathy Adamantium 4-2 and holding Waples hitless to snap his 22-game hitting streak. The 21-year-old second baseman had a few words to say after finishing 0-for-4, telling reporters only that he "came up short."

"What Jim did was exciting and quite an achievement," said Adamantium manager Chase Stingwing. "It's tough enough to get one hit in this league, much less go 22 games in a row. I'm even more proud of the way he handled the press coverage. He never let the frenzy get to him or affect his play."

This year Waples is hitting .380 with no home runs and 7 RBIs to his credit. He has gotten on base at a .412 clip and scored 18 runs.

30 April 2299 - Big Day for Lacy in 10-7 Swatters Win

Getting a good performance from right fielder Wayne Lacy, the Diamond City Swatters defeated the Vault 81 Dwellers, 10-7. Lacy was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 5 for the Swatters. For the Dwellers, the loss makes them 6-14.

Lacy had a key at-bat for Diamond City early in the game. With runners on 1st and 2nd, he hit a 3-run home run. It was his 6th home run of the season and gave Diamond City an early 3-0 lead.

"It was a nice win for our side today," said Swatters manager Bucky Bachelor. "Not perfect, but we'll take it."

30 April 2299 - Garge Slugs Radstags to 7-4 Win

With right fielder Cram Garge leading the charge, the Concord Radstags defeated the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud, 7-4, at Nuka Park. Garge hit 2 home runs. Earning his 2nd save of the year was Bell Franklin. Concord is still hoping to get on a roll. The win is just their 6th in 20 games.

Josh McIntyre drove in one run for Concord. The 20-year old second baseman had a key at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. With no one out and the bases loaded, he broke a 4-4 tie with a run-scoring catcher's interference off Radscorpion Johnson. It was his 9th RBI of the season.

"We'll relax tonight and enjoy this win," said Garge.

30 April 2299 - Rathmann has 3 Hit Day to Power Yao Guai Offense

In the 12-6 FHE win over Egret, the impact of Joe Rathmann was substantial. Rathmann, who is tied for 7th in the SCA in stolen bases with 4, went 3-4 with a triple, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. The winning pitcher was Papa Bush. His record is now 1-0. The left-hander went 6.2 innings, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits for the Yao Guai. The loss puts Egret at 9-11.

Rathmann had a game-changing triple in the top of the seventh. On a 2-1 slider from Nick Poppa, he banged a run-scoring triple to right, giving the Yao Guai a 5-4 lead. It was the 1st triple of the year for Rathmann.

Rathmann expressed little emotion after the game. "Every game we win now," he said, "is one less win we'll need to get in the end."

30 April 2299 - Witch Hats Absorb 6-1 Loss at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium

Nordhagen Beach Party Boys starter Derek Gist kept the Salem Witch Hats hitters in check, leading his team to a comfortable 6-1 win. Gist went 6.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 0, and struck out 4. His record improves to 4-0. Nordhagen Beach is off to a hot start at 15-5.

Jon Hitman had a key at-bat with one out in the bottom of the fifth for Nordhagen Beach. With the bases loaded and the Party Boys leading 2-1, he drew a walk, driving in 1 run.

"Good baseball players make you a smarter manager," said Nordhagen Beach manager Craig Robinson.
