Looks like the message.dat file's data somehow got reset to include old news stories from 3 years ago, which will break everything after that.
You can fix it in the original converted save by copying the the "db_news" file from one of the quickstart folders, e.g. \Documents\Out of the Park Developments\Franchise Hockey Manager 7\quickstart_games\OpeningDay.quick, over the one in the save. That'll remove all news stories shown at the start but after that all new news will work correctly. (The quickstart will essentially do the same thing with more steps, since it's creating a new game.)
