It is unfortunate that you had technical difficulties that you were unable to resolve.
For me, and I trust for the vast majority of OOTP gamers here, the last few versions of OOTP in particular have been extremely stable. I play roughly 1,000 hours of OOTP per version and can't even remember the last time I've had even the smallest issue with the game.
I say this not to minimize your experience and again I'm sincerely sorry that you encountered problems. But I will suggest that you have made a generalization in this post that simply doesn't bear up under close scrutiny.
