I stopped using the in-game backup years ago as I occasionally had problems with it.
I started to zip the entire league file from the "Saved Games"-folder on December 31 league date, move it to my external hard drive and everything is fine.
The worst case scenario for me is losing one full season and of course you can zip your file at several points of the season if you want to be even safer
