I actively avoid signing contracts that I think may not be worth the entire length of it. I won't generally sign a SP to a multi year deal that takes him over the age of 35 at the end of it.
I always put in team option buyouts as insurance on the final couple years also in case of decline. Sometimes they come back and ask for a higher buyout, I meet demand since it is lower than eating their whole salary 5 years down the road.

He refused a minor league assignment. i put him on Waivers, then DFA'd him after trying every single team with cash available to trade him to.
He was due 8/8/10 the next 3 years including this year.
