12 July 2299 - Perfect Game for Cave Crickets' Thurston
So rare that it is more a figment of the imagination than an actual possibility for a professional ballplayer, the near-mythical perfect game became reality for Rob Thurston today.
The Victory Cave Crickets left-hander dominated the Cherry Ghoulrillas at John-Caleb Bradberton Honorary Field, securing the 1-0 Cave Crickets victory and a place for himself in the history books.
"As a kid I imagined pitching a perfect game, but it was only a fairy tale -- I didn't really ever expect to pitch one," Thurston said later, sitting in the clubhouse with a crowd of reporters. "I don't want to demean it, but I've lost games where I had better stuff than I had today. It all just fell into place in this one."
The 21-year-old Thurston retired all 27 Ghoulrillas batters in a row. He surrendered no hits, walked none, struck out 11 and permitted no one to get on base. He also pitched a no-hitter on 21 May against the Grape Painted Ghouls.
So far this season Thurston is 5-1 with a 0.75 ERA in 9 starts. The two-way player is also batting .391 with no home runs, 2 RBIs and 4 runs scored. He has 9 hits in 23 at-bats, 4 walks and a .500 OBP. Thurston has played in 15 games.
