RIP John LaRose
Was doing an image search today and found out that John LaRose, who appeared in relief in one game for the Red Sox in 1978, passed away on January 14 of this year. Drafted first by the Yankees, he had an 11 year MiLB career that spanned 1970-1980 in the Red Sox' system, surfacing at the big league level as a September call-up during the infamous Sox Swoon (and brief rebound) of 1978. He was treated harshly by the Tigers in his one appearance on the 20th.
LaRose is one of the toughest image finds of 1978 - a color image of him from the Sox 1979 yearbook (shown here) is all that there is in color, and nothing of him seems to exist in the older red-capped unis they were still wearing in 1978 - if anyone has any leads on a red-hatted photo of LaRose, my 1978 project would be forever indebted to you.
A final note - his hat is fitted strangely in this image - looks a few sizes to big, like it's sitting on his hair but not gripping his head.
A belated farewell, Mr. LaRose.
