With this type of player, I would offer a 6 year deal with the first 3 years at $200k (or whatever your budget will allow) and then backload the deal higher. If you have budget issues, you could do this...

Year 1 - $150,000
Year 2 - $175,000
Year 3 - $200,000
Year 4 - $225,000
Year 5 - $250,000
Year 6 - $275,000

Average salary is what matters. That's $212,500. That's within 90% of what he is asking for. Most players will accept this type of deal.

In the future, any players entering their final years before free agency should be locked up before the season starts. You will be able to sign them for lower than during the season, especially if they are performing well.

If you don't sign before the season, it is usually best to wait until after the season. If the price is still too high, I roll the dice and wait 3-4 weeks into free agency. If they haven't signed yet, you can get them at a lower price and less years.
