Altuve is on the wrong side of the aging curve, and due 4 years at 26 per, $104 mil.
Betances is a totally washed garbage reliever due 7 mil over 2 years.
If you solely look at the cost benefit analysis of this... and value a win at 7.5 mil, is Altuve going to give you 13.86 WAR over the next 4 years? Can you better allocate that money elsewhere? That's 97 million you free up to spend elsewhere.
Like imagine if the former Mets GM wasn't legally brain damaged, Seattle would've dumped Cano for Bruce/Swarzak and some middling prospects and attached Diaz just to get out from under that contract. Same general principle here, except... yanno, you don't get the benefit of trading with a brain damaged used car salesman.
