August Good News/Bad News
There's been good news and bad news as we grind through August.
In good news, we've opened up a 16 game lead in the AL West while California has floundered.
In bad news, a very healthy season has turned for the worse. First, Kirby Puckett, who was called in at the end of July to replace Oddibe McDowell in center field, got injured on a defensive play in center field. The diagnosis is a herniated disc and he'll be missed for about 4 weeks. Puckett had filled the 2-hole admirably, hitting .328 with 14 RBI's in 28 games. McDowell was called back up from AAA to take back the CF spot. So far, he's responded in going 3/7 with a double, triple, and scoring 3 runs in 2 games.
Then, starting 3B Tim Wallach was hit by an Alan Fowlkes pitch and will go on the 15-day DL with a bruised elbow. Wallach was filling the cleanup spot admirably, hitting .286 with 73 RBI's and hitting a team leading 25 homers. Kelly Paris will be recalled from AAA to take Wallach's spot.
