Doyle Named GM and Manager in Baltimore (New York Daily News)
In what is a surprising move, the Baltimore National League ball club has named 33 year old Trevor Doyle to the dual role of General Manager and Manager of the ball club. Doyle has been a minor league manger for about a year and a half, starting his career in 1946 with the Tallahassee Pirates and continuing this year with the Charleston Rebels.
Doyle is a former football and baseball player at Ohio University, from East Liverpool, Ohio. He has a wife and 2 kids, Evelyn (10) and Adam (8). Doyle will manage two more games with the Charleston Rebels, finishing up this Saturday before he resigns from his post.
Many people are wondering why the new Baltimore team picked such a inexperienced person for this role. Rumors in the Baltimore search were that they went after several established big league executives, including Leo Durocher, but were turned down. They turned up on Doyle because of his exploits with his single A Charleston Rebels team this year.
The Rebels have endured a 14 game losing streak during the season, but have recovered to just 4 games under .500 at 44-48. Charleston has also beaten two higher level teams this season, the AAA Orioles in Charleston in April, and a surprising wire-to-wire win over the Athletics at Shibe Park in May.
The Baltimore club reportedly wants someone with a “fresh” perspective on the game.
