The game wouldn't (and couldn't) force your system to restart. So there has to be something else odd going on here (overheated processor, corrupted OS files or maybe something less dramatic but still sufficient to trigger that).
As for the rest, it's super hard for me to say offhand if that could be a factor or not. I'll mention the hotkey idea to the devs though.
