Preview – Virginia Fury

  • MANAGER: Earl Weaver
  • HOME PARK: Bethlehem Ballpark
  • TOP POSITION PLAYER: N/R
  • TOP PITCHER: Mike Mussina (18)
  • TOP PROSPECT: CF Willie Mays (20)
  • 26TH MAN: Christian Yelich

The Fury are almost the antithesis of the Rainiers, in that they should be one of the dominant teams early but look to have somewhat limited upside compared to some of the other sides in the competition. A strong spine is always a good starting-point, and this Virginia squad is up there with the best in this regard, with Torre behind the plate, Boudreau at short and The Say Hey Kid manning CF. But outside of that they are a fairly middling bunch that may struggle to score bunches of runs. That said, with their pitching staff, they may not need to. Mussina, Vazquez and Spalding all look ready from Day One, and Mathewson and Ryan will then slip into the rotation a few years down the track to really bolster it. They also have Brooks Robinson manning the hot corner and Clemente in RF, and are as defensively sound as almost any other group. To see Robby C standing in the outfield next to Willie, who thought so highly of him IRL, will be one of this save’s true pleasures.
