The 1947 season has started for the Philadelphia Athletics! It has been a very interesting start to say the least in the first year without Connie Mack in over 40 years. The A’s started with a very tough assignment... The Yankees in Yankee Stadium.
@ Yankees (4/15-17):
4/15: NYY 9, PHA 1; W- Bevens (1-0), L- Fowler (0-1); HR: Keller (1), Etten (1): Attendance- 36,287
4/16: NYY 9, PHA 1; W- Haefner (1-0), L- Coleman (0-1); HR: DiMaggio (1), Henrich (1): A- 18,269
4/17: NYY 5, PHA 4 (10); W: Page (1-0), L- Savage (0-1), BS- Christopher (1); HR: Robinson (1), DiMaggio (2), Henrich 2 (3), A- 18,343
A very tough start for the A’s in Yankee Stadium. Two blowout games that were never a game and then a 10-inning nail biter where the A’s blew a 4-1 9th inning lead. The Yankees, who lost their opener, finished the series 3-1.
Red Sox (4/18-19):
As the A’s returned to Shibe Park, the largest crowd in Philly Opening Day history (32,423) showed up to see the new A’s. They were disappointed in these two games.
4/18: BOS 3 PHA 2; W: Harris (1-0), L: Newsom (0-1); HR: Doerr (2), A- 32,423
4/19: BOS 3 PHA 1; W: Parnell (1-0), L: Flores (0-1, injured in 3rd inning); A- 8,365
The Athletics started 0-5, only scoring 9 runs in the 5 games. It was an anemic offensive start for Philadelphia. Things were about to turn.
Yankees (DH, 4/20)
4/20 (Game 1): PHA 6, NYY 5; W- Christopher (1-0), L- Gettel (0-1); HR: Gordon (1), DiMaggio (4), A- 9,392
4/20 (Game 2): PHA 5, NYY 0; W- Lively (1-0), L- Haefner (1-1); A- 9,898
A great day for the A’s and their fans on a cold and windy afternoon in Philadelphia. A game winning 2B by Elmer Valo in the 9th to give the A’s a win in Game 1, and then followed up by a shutout in Game 2. What could have been a disastrous start for Philly instead turned into a decent weekend.
Senators (4/22-23)
4/22: PHA 11, WAS 4; W: Coleman (1-1), L: Pieretti (0-2), HR: Benson (1), Chapman (1), Rosar (1), Valo (2), Torgeson (1); A- 8,866
4/23: PHA 5, WAS 4; W: Newsom (1-1), L: Brunke (0-2), S: Christopher (1); A- 8,871
After a 0-5 start, suddenly with two big wins over Washington, the A’s were a game under .500 at 4-5 going on a long road trip.
The A’s are hitting the ball hard, with Elmer Valo at .394 and Pete Suder at .469 from the 8 hole. Buddy Lively has been a revelation from the mound, with two very solid outings against the Yankees and a 1.29 ERA.
The A’s will head to Boston for a 4 game series, Cleveland for 2, Detroit for 3, the White Sox for 3, the Browns for 2, and finish with Washington for 4 before coming back home May 13. A lot about the season will be told in this road trip, which will be followed by 19 games at home that will take us all the way to Memorial Day.
