Game of the Week – Sunday, 21st May 1961
New York Gothams (19-27) @ Boston Beacons (24-22)
Harbor Street Yards – Boston, MA; 7.05 pm
BOST: Felix Hernandez (3-1, 2.77)
NYOR: Jacob deGrom (4-2, 2.86)
Good evening folks, and welcome to another Game of the Week – I’m your host, Nik Hill. We’re coming to you live from Harbor Street yards in Admirals Hill, north across the Mystic River from Boston and, boy, tonight’s game has got just about everything you could hope for from a baseball contest. Fierce divisional rivals who don’t much seem to like each other at all, two of the hottest pitchers in the league, and a superb array of offensive talent all on show in the one place.
This evening, the home fans will be hoping their beloved Beacons can repeat their excellent performance from last night when they knocked off the visiting New York Gothams by a score of 7 to 1 behind a fantastic complete game by Ned Garver. They’ll have their work cut out for them, though, as Jacob deGrom takes the mound for New York with the aim of improving upon his 4-2 record, and they’ll need to be much better tonight than they were when they last faced the gun righty at the end of last month. On that occasion, he shut them out on eight hits over 7 innings en route to a comfortable 6-0 win for the Gothams and they didn’t seem to have any answers against him at all.
That said, the Gothams – who, it is fair to say, have been one of the league’s biggest underperformers to this point – have a huge task facing them as well, with the mighty King Felix Hernandez casting his commanding presence from the hill. Felix has been fantastic so far, going 3-1 with a 2.77 ERA, and is coming off an excellent 5-hit complete game win over the tough Colonials. He has been almost unhittable at times, and his 76 strikeouts are just two off the lead in the entire PBL.
Neither pitcher, however, will get things all their own way tonight--not with the hitters they’ll be facing. Guys like Judge, Bagwell and Winfield for the visitors and the tricky threesome at the heart of the home side’s lineup: Fred Clarke, Arky Vaughn and Ronald Acuna, as well as the young man waiting patiently down on the field with our own Juliana Scott. Juliana, who’ve you got for us tonight?
Juliana Scott: Hi Nik, it’s very noisy down here with the home fans having a few things to say to a couple of the Gothams’ players, so I hope you can hear me OK. I’m here with one of the rising stars for the Beacons Ty Cobb. Ty, thanks for joining us.
Ty Cobb: My pleasure, ma’am.
JS: It’s not just the fans who seem to have taken a bit of a dislike to the boys from the Big Apple, Ty. You had a little to-do with them yourself last month didn’t you? A quick unscheduled mound visit to exchange a few key insights with Walter Johnson about his pitching technique that he didn’t seem to take too kindly to.
TC: Oh no, Juliana, Train and I are great mates – been playing against each other on the way up a few years now. I just hadn’t seen him for a while and was just checking to make sure his ma was well and he’d bought her something nice for Mother’s Day (laughs).
JS: (Laughing) Well he must have forgotten to get her a present if his response was anything to go by.
TC: Yes, he was very upset that he hadn’t bought her the pearls he’d promised if he ever made the bigs and lashed out at the nearest person, which unfortunately just happened to be me (laughs).
JS: Fair enough, let’s leave it at that. You’re from Georgia, originally, have you found it difficult to settle in to a new city?
TC: Don’t get me wrong, I love Georgia to bits and miss it like heck sometimes. But I’m a baseball player first and foremost. No kidding, I’d move to the Moon as long as it had a baseball diamond or two set up and ready to play on.
JS: The way you play the game, I have no doubt about it. Is that intensity something you’ve always had or has it been a recent development.
TC: I’ve always been a bit on the feisty side to be honest, at least on the diamond. I know it’s a double-edged sword, that sometimes it goes against me. But it seems to work for me on the whole, so that’s just how it has to be, I guess. Hopefully I get better at controlling it and using it to my advantage the older I get. I find myself spending a lot of time watching Arky and Fred Clarke. Both of them are just as competitive as me, perhaps even more’n I am. But they channel it better than I’m able to, they rarely lose their cool, only if it’s absolutely necessary. That’s what I’m hoping to be able to learn how to do. Because – and they’d be the first to admit this – I’m a better natural ballplayer than either of them.
JS: Let’s turn our attnation to tonight, how do you plan to get on top of deGrom – he’s been tough so far, hasn’t he?
TC: Yeah, I guess so. But no pitcher’s unhittable, not like the feller upstairs said, not even our Felix. We just played bad that night. But he’s got good control and a fair arsenal of pitches, I’ll give him that. So you just need to be patient. He’s only human, he’ll make a mistake eventually. That’s when you have to pounce.
JS: Well we are really anticipating a great game tonight, Ty. Thanks for talking to us and all the best.
TC: Thanks a bunch, been a pleasure.
JS: Back to the feller upstairs, Nik – he’s a lively one all right, our Mister Cobb.
He sure is Juliana, can’t wait to see how his career plays out. I know the Bostonites think very highly of him, let’s hope he can live up to the hoopla. We’ll be back with all the action after this short commercial break.
TOP 1ST
A strong start by Hernandez as he sends them down as they came up.
BOTTOM 1ST
No runs, hits or errors in the home half.
TOP 2ND
No dramas again for The King.
BOTTOM 2ND
Fred Clarke gets the game’s first hit and moves to third on another single by Stan Hack, before coming home on a sac fly by our friend Mr Cobb to put the home side in front.
Boston 1, New York 0
TOP 3RD
A walk and nothing else for the visitors, who are still looking for their first hit.
BOTTOM 3RD
A two-out rally nets the Beacons a second run as Tinker singles, swipes second and comes home on a Vaughn single – that’s 27 RBI now for the Boston shortstop.
Boston 2, New York 0
TOP 4TH
A leadoff walk to Bagwell is erased when Mathews rolls into a double play.
BOTTOM 4TH
A two-out double by Cobb amounts to nothing.
TOP 5TH
Andruw Jones reaches on a wild pitch but is then caught trying to steal second with a perfect throw by Boston backstop Gary Carter. Hernandez’s no-hitter lives into the 6th.
BOTTOM 5TH
A single by Tinker with two out keeps the inning alive but Vaughn can only ground out to short.
TOP 6TH
Another perfect inning by Hernandez.
BOTTOM 6TH
Nothing doing for the Beacons.
TOP 7TH
The crowd groans as one when Gothams third-baseman Eddie Mathews breaks up The King’s no-no bid with a one-out single. But he recovers to get them out of the inning without conceding.
BOTTOM 7TH
After Cobb continues his good game with a leadoff single, New York skipper John McGraw decides to hook his starter, bringing southpaw David Wells in to relieve him. A successful sacrifice by Doerr puts the Georgia Peach in scoring position but Wells gets out of the inning unscathed.
TOP 8TH
Hernandez, looking as strong as he did in the 1st, sends them down 1-2-3.
BOTTOM 8TH
Tinker gets his third hit of the game to lead off the inning but Hartnett nails him trying to pilfer second with a pinpoint throw.
TOP 9TH
Hernandez caps off a superb performance with another easy inning to give the Beacons a shutout win. The big
BOTTOM 9TH
X
Boston 2, New York 0 (final).
WP: Felix Hernandez (4-1)
LP: Jacob deGrom (4-3)
POTG: Felix Hernandez 9 IP / 1 H / 0 ER / 9 K.
Well what a sensational performance from Felix Hernandez, as he shuts out New York with a sublime one-hitter. He faced just 29 batters and 67 of his 106 pitches were for strikes. The Gothams bats continue to flounder, registering just 4 flyouts all game while whiffing 9 times and they failed to get a runner past second base, such was Hernandez’s dominance.
That brings tonight’s telecast to a close and we’re back here in the Northeast next Sunday for our first look at the Indianapolis Arrows as they play host to the Washington Grays, another side we’ve yet to see live, at Qualys Field. Until then, have a great week.
