Offseason Plan for Pitchers
Let's take a look at some of pitchers before heading in to the offseason.
Starting Pitchers
Kohei Arihara - Our current "ace" of the staff. He put up 3.7 WAR in his first season in North America.
Just turned 29 in August and is due to make $3.6m in 2022.
Dane Dunning - The soon to be 27 year old had a 2.8 WAR season in 2021 and has not reach two years of service time yet.
Our scout is not very confident in his homerun suppression (45 movement) or his ability to locate his pitches (40 control).
John King - Just turned 27 in September and this LH pitcher is the perfect up and down SP to fill a spot start when needed (two option years remaining).
We will be looking to add a variety of SP options this offseason.
Bullpen
DeMarcus Evans - This 25 year old reliever could very well be our closer in 2022.
He has been able to limit the homeruns (55 movement) but his control is poor (40 rated but career BB/9 of 6).
Jose Leclerc - Turning 28 in December. Missed all of 2021 with TJ surgery.
Due to make $4.75m in 2022 and $6m in 2023 (team option for 2024 at $6.25m)
He is absolutely trade bait at this point.
Brett De Geus - Turning 24 in a few days, this rule 5 pick was excellent for us before getting hurt in August (2.51 ERA / 3.07 FIP).
He will be one of our key setup / closer / stopper options for 2022 and beyond.
Jonathan Hernandez - Only 25 years old and has an option year remaining. Coming off a down season, but I like his BB/9 (even though our scout gives him a 45).
I might try to extend him for 2023 this offseason once his contract for 2022 is renewed.
Brett Martin - Turning 27 in April, this LH reliever was pretty reliable in 2021 (3.78 ERA / 3.81 FIP).
He is due to make roughly $1m in arbitration this offseason.
Taylor Hearn - Just turned 27 in August, but this LH reliever will likely serve as trade bait this offseason.
His performance was mediocre and our scout gives him a 40 grade for movement & control.
Josh Sborz - Soon to be 28 year old RH reliever who was a -0.3 WAR player in 2021.
He profiles out as a middle relief option, but could also serve as a trade candidate.
Tyler Zuber - This 26 year old RH reliever came over in a trade from KC this past June.
He didn't pitch a lot for us after the trade and the homers and walks were a bit worrisome.
Could be an up/down AAA to MLB shuttle guy for 2022 (two option years left).
Durbin Feltman - Turning 25 in April, but this RH reliever was pretty strong in AAA last year after coming over in a July trade.
Our scout is pretty high on him (65 potential) and I like that he has 35 stamina.
He will be added to 40 man this offseason.
We will also need to add some better relief pitchers this offseason as well.
