June 4th, 1989
We finish in Atlanta today.
The Braves are pitching Len Damian (2-3, 4.76).
The Giants have Rick Sutcliffe (2-4, 3.62).
I have done well against Damian, going 6 for 17, or .353.
I kicked things off by striking out.
In the bottom half Jerome Walton scored on an Andres Galarraga sac fly.
Braves lead 1-0
Rob Deer led off the 2nd with a homer. Then Ruben Sierra crossed on an Alan Cockrell single.
I came up with two on and two out but I flew out to centre.
Giants lead 2-1
I got the final out of the inning off a Damian grounder.
I came up in the 4th, once again with men on 2nd and 3rd and two out. I grounded out to Jeff Blauser at short.
I made a great play on a Lonnie Smith grounder for the 2nd out in the bottom of the 6th, holding Galarraga at 3rd. Unfortunately then Blauser doubled to tie the game.
Game tied 2-2
I came up with one out in the 7th and was hit on a 2-2 count.
Stolen base #39, but I was left on 2nd.
In the 8th Walton scored on a Ken Griffey Jr. double.
Later that frame, Galarraga scored when Rick walked Ron Gant with the bases loaded. Then Jeff Bagwell singled, scoring Smith.
That was it for Rick. Willie Fraser came in from the 'pen.
He did no better as Blauser scored on a Terry Kennedy single.
Braves lead 6-2
I came up in the 9th with two out and Mike Aldrete on 1st. Duane Ward was pitching. I was hit for the second time this game and fifth time this season.
Miek and I moved up on a wild pitch, but it could have been defensive indifference.
Keith Hernandez walked, and now it is a little interesting. Tie run at the plate with two out.
The Braves went to Dave Smith to face Robby Thompson.
Sinker at the knees. 0-1
Robby hit the next pitch to Gant at 2nd, who threw him out, ending the game.
Awful game for me. Not just 0 for 3, but I had some great chances, which I squandered. I did have two hit-by-pitches and a stolen base.
The All-Star Vote was updated. I am still leading at short. Mark Davi sis running second in relief. Alan Cockrell is in second at catcher. Frank Viola is in 5th at Starting Pitcher.
On our way to Cincinnati we got word that the team was making a change. Luis Medina, who had been pretty disappointing and had pretty much loss his position to rookie, Ryan Klesko, was heading to Phoenix. Back was last year's starter, Steve Stanicek.
I expect Ryan will keep playing and Steve will back him up.
We also heard that Rob Deer was named the NL Player of the Week! Good job Rob!
