April 20-22, 2022: at San Antonio (3)
Game 1: The Rays made their first visit to San Antonio to take on the Alamos, and lost a very tough one in 10 innings 2-1. Ryan Yarbrough hit the leadoff man in the 1st, wild pitched him to 2nd, wild pitched him to 3rd and he scored on a sac fly and that was all he allowed going 8 2 1 1 0 5 in another brilliant outing. The Rays tied it in the 9th on a Christian Vazquez sac fly but Nick Anderson put two on in the 10th, Diego Castillo walked a man to load them with nobody out and who else but Kevin Kiermaier came through with the game-winning RBI single.
Game 2: Luis Patino's grip on a rotation spot might be slipping as he had his second disastrous outing in three starts, allowing 3 homers and 7 runs (5 earned) in 3 1/3 as the Rays fell again in San Antonio 11-8. The score was misleading as they put 6 on the board in the last 2 innings. Randy Arozarena homered (#2) and he and Christian Vazquez each drove in a pair.
Game 3: Brendan McKay, fresh off his 1-hit Maddux, was dominant again holding the Alamos to 7 5 1 1 1 8 and Brandon Lowe's 2-run first inning homer (#4) held up to give the Rays a 2-1 victory salvaging a game from the series. McKay is now 2-0, 1.29 with a 3/19 BB/K ratio in 21 innings so far this year. Nick Anderson held in the 8th with 2 whiffs and Ken Giles had a 1-2-3 9th for save #3.
Team record: 9-6, 2 games behind the Yankees. Next up: A trip to Detroit for 3 games. The young Tigers are off to a hot start at 10-5.
MLB News: Jack Leiter made his major league debut with Houston in relief and was pounded for 4 runs on 5 hits in 1 1/3 innings in a 16-5 Boston rout.
