May 6-8, 2022: at Seattle (3)
Game 1: Matt Peacock continues to be an inspired acquisition as he turned in a 6.1 4 1 1 2 6 line to go to 4-0, 3.16 in a 4-1 Rays win. And our long national nightmare is over as Ji-Man Choi finally hit his 1st homer of the year and it was a big one, breaking a 1-1 tie in the 4th. Austin Meadows hit #4 with a man on in the 5th to provide some separation, and the bullpen came through with Ken Giles nabbing save #4.
Game 2: Ryan Yarbrough has always pitched well against his old organization and today was no exception as the Rays broke open a 2-1 game late with a 3-run 8th to take a 5-2 win. Yarbs was a solid 6 5 1 1 1 6 and is 2-1, 2.92 with a nifty 3/23 BB/K ratio in 37 innings. Wander Franco's RBI double broke a 1-1 tie in the 3rd and Francisco Mejia had a big 2-run single in that 8th inning. Giles got the save again (#5) after Diego Castillo coughed up a run in the 8th. Christian Vazquez tried to score on that Franco double in the 3rd and suffered a hip flexor strain. It's "minimal" for 6 days so we'll play Mejia a lot and nurse him along.
Game 3: The Rays completed the sweep, but just barely after hanging on to a 6-5 win which saw Nick Anderson give up a late 3-run HR to Taylor Trammell to make things dicey. Before that Brendan McKay was blowing the M's away to the tune of 5.2 3 2 2 3 9, a season-high in Ks. Oscar Colas supplied the offense early with a pair of homers (#7 and 8) to account for the first 3 runs and Brandon Lowe's 3-run shot in the 8th (#8) proved to be huge given the Seattle rally. Anderson still got his 3rd save and two of the runners belonged to Aaron Fletcher, so it wasn't all him. Good to see Colas snap back after a lengthy slump as I was considering alternatives.
Team record: 22-8, now 6 up on the Yankees as New York dropped two out of three in Anaheim. Next up: Instead of shuttling down the coast to face those Angels, both teams will take a cross-country flight to play at the Trop for 3 starting tomorrow. Schedule makers, man.
