Homestead is across the Monongahela River from Pittsburgh, but by 1920, the Grays played their games in Pittsburgh, at both Forbes Field and Greenlee Field, the Crawfords park, sharing, at times, players, and maybe even ownership. By 1940, they began playing about half their home games in Washington, eventually getting up to about two-thirds of their schedule. At that time they were sometimes called the Washington Grays or Washington Homestead Grays. Among the Negro League players who played for the Grays were Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson, Oscar Charleston, Martin Dihigo, Judy Johnson, Willie Wells, Buck Leonard, and Smokey Joe Williams, among others.

An early warning - the Road Dogs lived up to their name and took three early bites out of the Mundys at Glorious Mundy Stadium to start this season. They keep this up and the Pirate discount for their stable mate goes down accordingly.
