Walkers news: August 28 -- Springfield 9, St. Louis 0
Record: 56-72, 7th, 11.5 GB Springfield
Springfield starting pitcher Ewdy Alex took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning, and after being staked to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, it was easy as the Railers routed St. Louis 9-0 at Busch Stadium (2006).
The win gave Springfield wins in the first and third games of the three-game series.
Ewdy (3-0) held the River Walkers hitless until the bottom of the seventh when Jose Ramirez led off with a single.
Ewdy exited with two outs in the seventh after issuing a walk to Jared Thomas.
He struck out two and walked during his time on the mound.
Argenis Batista completed the seventh without incident.
Cole Duensing worked a scoreless eighth inning and got the first out of the ninth.
The final two outs of the game belonged to Coleman Huffman, as the Walkers finished with just the one hit for the game.
Springfield seized control from the get-go with its four-run first against St. Louis starter Jerry Tate.
After a one-out walk to Adan Valette, Billy Salas made it 2-0 with a home run.
After a ground out by Alex Otero, Tate gave up three straight singles -- along with throwing a wild pitch - to pave the way for the other two runs.
Ruben Villanueva and Matthew Lugo both earned RBIs with their singles.
Villanueva scored a run in the third with a two-out single off Tate.
He stole second and scored on Lugo's second single of the game.
The Railers made it real ugly with a three-run sixth.
Tate allowed the inning's first three batters to reach -- including an RBI single by Alex -- before heading to the shower.
Oscar Martinez took over and allowed a pair of runs, including an RBI single by Austin Schultz.
Villanueva earned another RBI with a run-scoring fielder's choice against Scott Rissler in the ninth.
