BYDL - Outstanding Prospects
Each week, we here at BNN will feature some of the Boston Youth Development League players showing their potential.
North Region
Concord-Lexington Second Baseman Picked NR Player of the Week: It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the North Region, but last week Tom Hopsman of the Concord-Lexington Minuteboys reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Hopsman rocked opposing pitching for a .517 average (15-for-29), 5 home runs and 9 RBIs to come away with the award.
South Region
Duffin Bags SR Best Player Award: So far in his young career, Tyler Duffin has kept a low profile, but after his performance at the plate last week, he attracted the notice of the rest of the South Region in a big way as he was named the Player of the Week today for his efforts.
The 15-year-old State House Orphans first baseman hit at a torrid .462 clip as he collected 12 hits in 26 at-bats, 5 home runs, 16 RBIs and 12 runs scored.
Senior Report
Below are some of the seniors (4th-year players in the new 4-year BYDL arrangement) who are expected to be top draft picks in 2300.
3B Bulleye Shooterson, South Beach Waves - .227/.469.500, 5/22, 2 HR, 7 R, 3 RBI.
Scouting Report: Raw power, chance to be a run producer. Aware of the strike zone and can work the count. Swings for fence too much, needs to work more on hitting to the situation. Potential to work his way into a starting role in time. Will never be a standout on defense but will not hurt the team either. Hard worker who will want to be in the mix regardless of the situation. Adapts well to his environment. Considered a baseball rat.
SP Quest Dawg, Hester Mechanists - 0-0, 1.42 ERA, 2 GS, 12.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 6 BB, 14 K
Scouting Report: Finesse pitcher who will rely on his changeup to be a top pitcher. Great movement and control potential will make him a tough in-out pitcher in time. Needs to work hard on avoiding the middle of the plate. Already commands four pitches well, but his curveball is not ready yet to show off in the BMU next season. Really smart and understands the game. Will be loyal to his team and takes what he gets. Works hard to improve his game, which will almost assuredly make him a 1st-round pick.
RF Orcin Cardinal, South Beach Waves - .333/.533/.667, 7/21, 2B, 2 HR, 2 R, 9 RBI
Scouting Report: A future home run boon. Waits for his pitch and rarely swings at bad pitches. However, his uppercut swing makes him miss too many hittable balls. He needs to work on hitting off-speed pitches better since those seem to throw off his swing. Not always focused nor interested. Will need to prove he is a hard worker and can change his game before he can hope to be a top pick.
CF Da Game, Andrew Station Southies - .308/.379/.423, 8/26, 3 2B, 5 R, 3 BB
Scouting Report: Speedy. Loves to put the bat on the ball, whether for a bunt or a drive to center field. Will probably hit for average in time once he learns to better find the gaps. Looks to be a good centerfielder wth good range and a good glove. Not the leader type, so needs to run with the best crowd to remain on the right track. Sometimes loafs on the practice field. Coaches will need to work him hard to his potential.
2B Zach Thorne, Fraternal Post 115 Leaders - .333/.367/.704, 9/27, 2B, 3 HR, 7 R, 10 RBI
Scouting Report: Hard-hitting infielder that could see him playing 2B or 3B in the CBO. Arm strength not great, but has the frame to improve it. Patient at the plate, which can sometimes lead to walks, but prefers to swing early in the count. Will punish first-pitch fastballs. Stable work habits, but loses focus too often. Needs coaches that will keep him interested and challenged.
