What motivates a player to accept ridiculously low offers in FA/extensions
New to the game and I was wondering what motivates a player to accept very low $ amount in FA even though they could ask for a lot more. In my save, Hunter Perdue showed up as a monster 1B in FA years ago after strangely not getting a qo from his previous team. 80 overall, multiple 5-6+ war seasons, 30 HR on average. Cream of the crop in a FA class that was hot garbage.
Contract demand. 12 mil. For multiple years. I jumped on him and gave him his 9 mil for 5 years which he accepted almost immediately. No other team even showed interest.
He only got better once on my team and after 3 american league mvp titles, I was like ho boy, he'll ask for the moon. Nope, he was fine accepting 12 mil again for 4 years. After this I extended him for a few years years at 18 mil and now, at age 38, after we won our first world series, and after a season in which he was the league leader in obp, slugging, ops and hr, he finally decided he was worth 40 mil for 5 years.
Was he really, really insecure for all those years ? I play without player morale btw. Every other guy on my team starts asking for 25 mil + once they get to FA and are halfway decent, I just had Hunter who I guess understood he needed to take a paycut for us to remain competitive.
