This is a big obstacle for me, as the work of going through each franchise to try to create "fair" trades is a bit daunting, but I need trading and economics to be an ongoing gear in dispersing talent.

Look I can't say unequivocally, but I'm pretty sure what you're seeking is not possible in the game as is.
And of course even if you do it manually, presumably by WAR, there are great discrepancies between that metric and the ratings players are assigned in-game.
For mine, I'd plan the whole thing out well in advance and then just force the trades or move the players to different teams with the editor, then assign them appropriate contracts.
Messy, but the only real way I see for this to be achieved.
It's problematic when you try to step outside the straightforward structure of the game. The manual I have drawn up for my ACBA college save is about a dozen pages long full of instructions that need to be done at least once a season. Hard yards, but ultimately worth it if you're an OC control freak like me.
In my Bucs save with the Legacies, I am allocating them a fairly-priced 10-year contract from the day they enter the league, with a no-trade clause built in. After that, I'm just letting come what may. Hopefully that will be enough to keep the big names where I want them to be.
